Gernot Schmalfuss a-t-il entrepris avec son orchestre taiwanais une intégrale des huit symphonies de Franz Lachner ? On peut le supposer puisqu’après la symphonie n°3 (1834) voici que paraît cette sixième (1837). On retrouve les traits caractéristiques du compositeur munichois ; une structure classique en quatre mouvements mais d’ampleur imposante (45 minutes) et une écriture très savante qui culmine dans l’épisode fugué qui conclut le premier mouvement, ainsi que dans le virtuose scherzo et son savoureux trio (le mouvement le plus réussi de l’œuvre à mon sens). Certes il manque au style très académique du compositeur les élans géniaux du modèle beethovenien tout comme le lyrisme inimitable de Schubert mais une fois encore CPO fait œuvre utile en révélant dans d’excellents conditions artistiques l’un de ces petits maîtres qui eurent le malheur de vivre et d’exister en même temps que les plus grands de leur temps. Et, double peine, la grande longévité de Lachner lui valut sur le tard d’être démis de ses fonctions à Munich pour faire de la place à un certain Wagner. Complément original, le concertino pour basson met à l’honeur la soliste de l’orchestre et enrichit le répertoire de son instrument. (Richard Wander)

The premiere of Franz Lachner’s Symphony No. 6 was held in Munich on 19 April 1837 with the composer as the conductor. The Munich press termed it a »magnificent work« and an »outstanding masterpiece,« and in this truly extraordinary work Lachner refrains from the confrontational juxtaposition of large-format thematic blocks (above all occurring in his third and fifth symphonies), instead presenting a »more organic« compositional style in which motivic-thematic developments are realized step by step. Lachner’s Concertino for Bassoon and Orchestra is a work from 1824, composed during his Vienna years. He dedicated it to Theobald Hürth, who was then the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra’s principal bassoonist. It is not known whether or not Hürth ever performed this work in public, and performances of it are not documented. It is one of the earliest extant compositions by Lachner and possibly his first work with orchestra. Here Chia-Hua Hsu, the solo bassoonist of Taiwan’s Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, interprets its recording premiere.
