Autant le dire tout de suite, les œuvres contenues sur ce disque sont magnifiques de bout en bout. Girolamo Abos (1715-1760) est un compositeur d’origine maltaise ayant vécu à Naples la majeure partie de sa vie, bien qu’il ait également voyagé partout en Europe et séjourné à Londres. D’où l’influence de Pergolèse sur sa production, qu’on peut rattacher au style galant napolitain. Musique religieuse, ici donc, mais très expressive, pas austère, d’un caractère quasi opératique. Comme toujours chez CPO, la prise de son est très belle, avec une basse continue discrète mais suffisamment présente pour soutenir l’ensemble, avec notamment une touche de théorbe aux accents suaves. Équilibre parfait entre l’orchestre et les voix. On notera l’emploi étrange pour l’époque d’un basson quasi concertant dans l’aria pour basse « Ut sine timore » du premier morceau, créant une sonorité inédite. François-Joseph Fétis, grand critique musical du XIXe siècle, a dit en parlant d’Abos qu’il n’avait rien écrit d’intéressant. On en retiendra que des interprètes de choix peuvent redonner ses lettres de noblesse à un compositeur délaissé par l’Histoire faite par les critiques. (Christophe Frionnet)

The concert by the choir and orchestra of the Kölner Akademie honoring Girolamo Abos was a highlight of the Valletta International Baroque Festival 2015 in Malta. This composer born exactly three hundred years ago in Malta and active in Naples is as good as unknown in Germany – and not only here. This now will change with the release of this concert this month on cpo. The Kölner Akademie conductor Michael Alexander Willens and the musicologist Frederick Aquilina were just the right persons with the right contacts and with the right attitude and experience for enlisting themselves in the cause of this Maltese composer, whose works »have not been heard for centuries« (Tabona). The »Magnificat,« »Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel,« and »Messa a due cori« enable listeners to immerse themselves in the extremely fascinating world of Abos and the thoroughbass. This is more than rewarding inasmuch as Abos is a genuine discovery and in every way a match for his Italian contemporaries. This composer’s works are highly melodic, elegant to highly spirited in temperament, and above all they render audible the experience of musical delight. The wonderfully beautiful soprano Maïlys de Villoutreys and Mauro Borgioni in the bass part represent a second discovery.
