A vingt-trois ans, Walter Rabl, né à Vienne, remportait un concours de composition que présidait Brahms avec son opus 1, un quatuor pour clarinette, violon, violoncelle et piano (le troisième prix allait au trio de Zemlinsky). Musique inspirée, certes dans la descendance du dernier Brahms qui l’appréciait hautement, mais d’une grande richesse d’idées et d’une originalité d’écriture remarquables. Dans la foulée, les Fantasiestücke opus 2 confirmaient ce talent précoce. En 1899, un nouveau bouquet de pièces de chambre, dont la séduisante et tellement viennoise sonate opus 6 confirmait ces dons. Hélas, après son unique opéra « Liane » (1903), Rabl allait renoncer à la composition pour se consacrer à la direction d’orchestre au service de ses contemporains les plus novateurs. Sans doute est-ce là la raison de l’oubli dans lequel son œuvre, très restreinte numériquement, est tombée de son vivant même. Pourtant à entendre ce nouveau CD, on découvre une personnalité originale, un maître de l’écriture et un compositeur de grand talent ; son quatuor mérite certes de figurer dignement au répertoire à côté du trio de Zemlinsky. Un grand coup de chapeau en particulier à l’infatigable Oliver Trendl et à Geneviève Laurenceau dont le récent enregistrement de la sonate de Magnard a rallié tous les suffrages. (Richard Wander)

In any case, the best is a piano quartet with clarinet. It is said to be by Rabl, a Nawratil pupil. I know the young man and his music only a little … Of course I now am keeping him and his piece in mind.« Johannes Brahms wrote this very positive judgment about the twenty-three-year-old Walter Rabl’s op. 1 in a letter of 1896 to his publisher Simrock. The fact that Simrock did not hesitate long and gladly included Rabl’s compositions in his catalogue is not surprising: after all, it is precisely in the said Clarinet Quartet that the spirit of Brahms’s chamber music is more clearly felt than it is in the music of almost any other representative of what was then the young generation. The perfect compositional artistry attesting to strict schooling and the melodic richness pervading all the movements in Rabl’s op. 1 immediately captivate the listener. In all likelihood Rabl composed his Fantasy Pieces for Piano Trio immediately after the Clarinet Quartet. They are character pieces alternating between lyricism, cantability, and dance. He penned the Violin Sonata op. 6, it too a powerful, richly melodious work in the spirit of Brahms, just prior to the end of the nineteenth century.
