Friedrich Gernsheim, dont on avait commencé à reconnaître le talent grâce à la publication de l’enregistrement de ses quatre symphonies (CPO777758 et CPO777848), fut l’élève pour la composition d’Edward Rosenhain, d’Ignaz Moscheles pour le piano, et devint le familier apprécié de Brahms et Bruch. Lors de cinq années parisiennes (1855-1860), il fréquenta Gouvy, Lalo, Rossini mais aussi Liszt, Saint-Saëns. Ultérieurement, Anton Rubinstein, Mahler, Richard Strauss furent aussi de son cercle. Il en résulte une esthétique musicale composite mais non sans intérêt pour son lyrisme sincère et attachant. En témoignent les quatre Sonates pour violon et piano (1853, 1859, 1885, 1898), présentées ici dans des interprétations très soignées et convaincantes. On ne cherchera pas dans ce laps de temps une évolution sensible du style du compositeur mais plutôt un approfondissement de sa veine intimiste, qu’exposent par ailleurs l’Introduction et Allegro appasionato (1876) et l’Andante en fa majeur (1853), judicieusement ajoutés par l’éditeur à ces deux CDs bien dignes de retenir l’attention d’auditeurs épris d’une musique instrumentale parfaitement composée et très souvent séduisante par la charge émotive immédiate qu’elle transmet. For the biographer Karl Holl chamber music was »Friedrich Gernsheim’s very special artistic domain.« The composer again and again returned to this field during the course of his life, from his beginnings in Leipzig and Paris to his later Berlin years. The violin sonatas in particular stand out in this group within his oeuvre because they, more than any other genre, document his compositional development. Things began with the fourteen-year-old’s Sonata in E minor, composed for exercise purposes in Leipzig and heard here for the first time on CD, and continued by way of his op. 4, his first full-fledged contribution to this genre, to the mature opp. 50, 64, and 85, with thirteen to fourteen years separating the composition of each of these works. The fourth sonata, a work dedicated to Henri Marteau, may be regarded as the high point of Gernsheim’s duo oeuvre: here his contrapuntal line of thought, something that he had always cultivated, extends over the entire composition.
