Erlebach Fischer Kusser Ouvertures Et Suites Altberg Ensemble Böttischer - Dux1987

Après son premier album capté il y a trois ans et consacré à Telemann, l’Altberg Ensemble nous revient avec un CD qui entend réhabiliter quatre « petits maîtres ». Ceux-ci firent carrière en Allemagne mais sous l’influence de la musique versaillaise, et notamment de Lully dont Johann Sigismund Kusser (1660-1727) fut l’apprenti et Johann Fischer (1646-1716) le copiste. On peut aussi supposer que Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (c1662-1746) croisa le compositeur fétiche du Roi soleil lors d’un voyage d’études dans le royaume dont l’art du ballet de cour rayonnait dans toute l’Europe. Si Johann Jakob Froberger contribua à normaliser la forme de la Suite pour clavier (allemande, courante, sarabande et gigue), dans son extension orchestrale Kusser fut un pionnier pour l’introduire par une Ouverture, cultivant une structure bipartite (introduction en rythme pointé, d’où s’élance un vif contrepoint). C’est cette matrice d’Outre-Rhin, enrichie de menuets, gavottes, airs, chaconnes, qu’illustre le programme, en invitant aussi deux préludes pour clavecin. Assouplie par une moelleuse pâte de cordes (douzaine d’archets), colorée par de savoureux souffleurs (hautbois, flûtes, basson), la prestation de l’équipe polonaise anime avec goût ces pages rares au disque. Habile (les Pollnische Dänze) voire délicate (le triangle pour accompagner les pizzicati d’un Eccho plage 11), la percussion en rappelle les mânes chorégraphiques. (Christophe Steyne)

The Altberg Ensemble’s album includes overtures and suites of the so-called small masters of the mature Baroque era; their work – after the ears of music lovers have been saturated with the music of great masters – is being slowly discovered and restored to the concert repertoire. The works presented on the album testify to the talent and craftsmanship of their composers, who share the peculiar patronage of another composer, Jean Baptiste Lully, associated with the court of Louis XIV. Although he himself did not compose any cyclical dance form, it was the composers fascinated by his work who did it. Initially, they studied with Lully or acted as copyists of his pieces; eventually, they gained popularity by travelling throughout Europe and contributed to the French influence on the German soil. The then national schools – Italian, French and German, as well as Polish – intertwine in the works presented on the album. The stylistically diverse dances create an interesting mosaic, vividly interpreted by an ensemble versed in historically informed performance on period instruments.
