 Fille d'un organiste et facteur de clavecin, Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre est une figure surprenante de l'histoire de la musique. Enfant prodige, elle se produisit devant Louis XIV à 5 ans et fit toute sa carrière à la Cour. Claveciniste, organiste, et surtout compositrice (une des premières femmes dont la production fut saluée comme exceptionnelle) elle s'illustra aussi bien dans la musique profane que religieuse, laissant aussi une tragédie lyrique. Son œuvre pour clavecin se compose de deux recueils, composés à 20 ans d'intervalle (1687/1707)?: elle ne publia rien entre 1694 et 1707, période durant laquelle elle perdit son fils unique, son père et son mari. Si son style emprunte à l'art du luth, elle déploie d'emblée une prodigieuse imagination, une liberté, une créativité d'autant plus remarquables que ces qualités s'exercent dans un genre très codé — celui de la suite. C'est donc par un travail subtil, un sens aigu de l'ornementation, une façon parfois infinitésimale de varier, un agencement raffiné des rythmes et des modulations qu'elle se distingue. C'est encore plus sensible mais aussi plus féerique dans le second recueil. On écrivit à l'époque qu'on trouvait dans ses pièces « de la tendresse, beaucoup de feu, une belle harmonie, un très heureux naturel ». L'interprétation de F. Lanfranco célèbre avant tout la force, l'énergie, la vigueur de ce style. Le feu, donc. Ça avance, il y a là une dynamique immédiate, irrésistible, une belle ardeur. Je lui préfère cependant la lecture de B. Verlet, plus suggestive et décantée, et, pour tout dire, plus poétique et rêveuse. (Bertrand Abraham) Acclaimed in her own time as ‘the wonder of our century’, Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre (1665-1729) occupies a place of outstanding importance in the cultural history of 17th and 18th-century France as a composer and harpsichordist. Her prodigious talents were recognised from when she played and sang to the court of King Louis XIV at the tender age of five years old. Her first book of harpsichord suites was published in 1687 and dedicated to her patron the king. The style of their brief dance movements inherits the characteristics of lute music, including the unbarred preludes which evoke a refined taste for improvisation. By the time that her second book of suites was published 20 years later, her life had been marked by the deaths of her only son, her father and her husband at the age of only 46; Jacquet de la Guerre took up composing once again as a wealthy, lonely widow. These later suites omit the preludes, but the writing within them is more florid and complex, offering a stiff challenge both to the technique and the imagination of the performer. The D minor Suite is conceived on the grandest scale, opening with a poignantly rhetorical piece entitled ‘La Flamande’ and closing ten movements later with a grand Chaconne. The suites are recorded anew here on a 1982 Fernando Granziera instrument after a 1736 model by Jena-Henri Hemsch; the soloist is the Italian harpsichordist Francesca Lanfranco, who also contributes a booklet essay on the career of Jacquet de la Guerre. Lanfranco studied with Bob van Asperen, Kenneth Gilbert and Christine Jacottet and is herself a noted teacher of harpsichord.
