Quel bel hommage ! Ning Feng, Chinois de naissance aura atteint son art dans le cadre si british de la Royal Academy of Music avant de le parfaire à Berlin auprès d’Antje Weithaas. Dès lors, quel concerto choisir pour son premier disque avec orchestre, sinon celui si fuyant, si déconcertant de Sir Edward Elgar qui laissa tant de violonistes sur son seuil et même certains qui auront tenu à l’enregistrer : voyez l’enregistrement de Jascha Heifetz. Ning Feng le joue avec une nostalgie étreignante, sans aucun effet, d’un archet léger, qui suggère sans cesse jusque dans les épisodes passionnés. Il refuse de les dramatiser, préférant les emporter dans un mouvement qui est d’abord une élévation. La beauté du style accroît encore cette sobre éloquence à laquelle Carlos Miguel Prieto tisse un orchestre lyrique en diable, qui chante autant que son soliste, fusion parfaite qui nous entraîne au cœur d’une partition insaisissable. Et quelle surprise de voir enregistrer, comme en coda au poème passionné d’Elgar, le Concerto « amoroso » écrit par Gerald Finzi pour son amour de jeune homme, Sybil Eaton, qui le créa amputé du premier mouvement que le compositeur méjugeait alors que sa délicieuse cabriole est le charme même. Ning Feng lui rend justice d’un archet vif et élégant, comme au sublime poème lyrique du Molto sereno, pastorale d’archets et de bois qui contient une de ces mélodies infinies qui ne vous quittent plus, secret de l’art de ce compositeur pour qui le violon était l’égal de la voix humaine à laquelle il destina ses chefs-d’œuvre. Incroyable, ce n’en est que la seconde version après celle de Tasmin Little et de Richard Hickox qui le révélèrent au disque, l’enregistrant en 1999. Il me semble que Ning Feng et Carlos Miguel Prieto vont plus au cœur de l’œuvre, écoutez les deux dernières minutes du second mouvement. Album magnifique. The violin was Edward Elgar’s own instrument and his Violin Concerto is almost like a personal confession: it was ‘too emotional’, Elgar admitted, adding that he loved it nonetheless. The solo part is one of the most exhausting in the repertoire – a veritable compendium of bravura violin techniques. In an interview, Fritz Kreisler, to whom the Violin Concerto is dedicated, ranked Elgar with Beethoven and Brahms. Elgar met the challenge: his Violin Concerto combines the singing quality of Beethoven’s with the symphonic drama of Brahms’s. The London-born Gerald Finzi was in many ways more English than Elgar and his teacher Ralph Vaughan Williams. As can be heard in his Violin Concerto, a well kept secret from 1927, that had its first performance after the premiere only in 1999. The work lasts twenty minutes: a six-minute allegro, a superb central ten-minute molto sereno, and ending with a fourminute hornpipe rondo. It is difficult to understand why Finzi was dissatisfied with his two fast movements. The first combines beauty with energy. Through its sheer romantic beauty, the molto sereno is one of those pieces where the hairs stand up on the back of the neck.
