L’immensément populaire cantate profane « Carmina Burana » composée en 1935-1936 sur des textes médiévaux assurera la célébrité de Carl Orff. Elle est ici filmée au soleil couchant dans le cadre somptueux de la place Saint Marc de Venise avec vues aériennes, projections vidéo sur les façades des Procuraties et, en fond de scène, la basilique et le campanile. Autant dire que visuellement le spectacle est garanti. Musicalement, l’œuvre bénéficie d’une interprétation à la hauteur de l’enjeu vocal. Mention particulière à la soprano dont on admire les parties héroïques « Stetit puella », « In trutina » et « Dulcissime » du troisième volet et au baryton qui ouvre le deuxième - « In Taberna » par un « estuans interius » quasi verdien. Le chœur mixte, le chœur d’enfants et l’orchestre sous la direction du chef italien Fabio Luisi déroulent avec aisance les trois parties de cette œuvre puissante et spectaculaire à défaut d’être très inventive (Stravinsky ne parlait-il pas de « néanderthalisme musical ?) dont le rythme implacable du « O Fortuna » introductif et conclusif soulève l’enthousiasme des publics du monde entier. With Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, one of the most popular pieces in music history and the most performed choral/orchestral work of the 20th century, Teatro La Fenice returns to the Piazza San Marco in Venice, in front of the magnificent façade of the Basilica di San Marco.
