 Brahms composa les deux sonates de l’opus 120 pour la clarinette, qui ne s’était pas encore établie comme un instrument naturellement soliste : le répertoire était restreint, et faute d’opportunités d’y briller, les clarinettistes d’envergure plutôt rares. Brahms produisit donc des transcriptions pour alto, sans doute pour donner plus d’audience à ces deux œuvres. Leur créateur, Richard Mühlfeld était d’ailleurs clarinettiste… et altiste ! Pour ce qui est du trio opus 114, le compositeur avait expressément prévu la possibilité de substituer l’alto à la clarinette, et ce dès la publication de la partition. Alors alto ou clarinette ? Je n’entrerai pas dans le débat sur les mérites respectifs des deux instruments, pour restituer les états d’âmes du dernier Brahms. Laissez donc l’altiste Andreas Willwohl vous entraîner dans ce voyage, avec son délié, sa projection, sa généreuse sonorité et son inépuisable palette de couleurs. Entente idéale avec le pianiste Daniel Heide : les deux artistes jouent ensemble depuis vingt ans, ils ont pris le temps de mûrir leur vision. Isang Enders les rejoint pour le trio, au même niveau d’accomplissement. Un magnifique disque d’alto, et surtout un magnifique disque Brahms.
