Stefan Donner, clavecin (Clavecin Joannes Daniel Dulcken, Belgique, 1745)

Stefan Donner, jeune organiste de 38 ans, nous livre sur ce magnifique double CD les variations Goldberg de Bach. La somptueuse pochette met à l’honneur un clavecin du facteur Joannes Daniel Dulcken, fabricant d’origine allemande qui était établi en Flandres au XVIIIe siècle. En effet, Joannes Daniel Dulcken était un membre de l’Eglise réformé et conseiller municipal à Hopland en 1744, et acquit en son temps une excellente réputation comme l’un des deux facteurs de clavecins les plus éminents de son époque avec les Ruckers. Stefan Donner joue ici sur l’un des clavecins du fameux maître facteur et il m’a été difficile d’échapper à la beauté qui distille un envoûtement de tous les instants. Dans un phrasé parfait, Stefan Donner lève une brise de douceur et de fraîcheur, nous plongeant dans un univers musical qui aurait fait dire à Charles Baudelaire : « Ici, tout n’est que luxe, calme et volupté ». Ce disque rejoint ma discothèque avec les versions de Blandine Verlet et de Scott Ross, donnant ainsi corps à une trilogie ô combien idéale des variations Goldberg. (Jean-Luc Pernel)

The harpsichord from 1745 by Joannes Daniel Dulcken bearing the inventory number SAM 726 not only is an instrument with a beautiful and most distinctive sound: it also commands admiration as a visually magnificent exhibition piece. Nothing is known about the original owners, but over the course of a century and a half it found its way from the production site in Antwerp to Vienna, where it was added to the collection of Historic Musical Instruments at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1921. In the following decades, its playability was restored in several stages, with its sound now documented for the first time on this CD. The internationally acclaimed Austrian organist and harpsichordist Stefan Donner presents the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach, one of the most famous variation cycles in music history, which is also an ideal choice of program due to the immediate proximity of its publication in 1741 to the time of the instrument’s creation.
