Peu de temps après l’achèvement de l’orgue de la Frauenkirche de Dresde, érigé par Gottfried Silbermann, Bach y donna un concert, en décembre 1736. On ignore ce qui fut joué pour l’événement. Ce qui n’empêche pas cet album de conjecturer un programme, illustrant les liens du compositeur avec la cité saxonne. Détruit en 1945 lors des bombardements, l’instrument fut reconstruit en 2005 par le facteur Alfred Kern, qui répliqua la plupart des jeux (par exemple le Chalumeau entendu ici dans le BWV 663), en ajouta d’autres (Soubasse et Fagott 32’ au pédalier, dont on entend gronder l’abyssal contre-ré dans les douze dernières mesures de l’Allabreve) et compléta la tribune par un nouveau clavier de Récit Expressif. Matthias Grünert se distingue par son jeu intensément soutenu (Fugue de la "Dorienne"), dru ("Meine Seele") et énergique (un chahuteur "Prélude" BWV 541, un effervescent "Wo soll ich fliehen hin"), des conclusions abruptes (BWV650, BWV 527/III), en contraste avec un "Allein Gott" délicatement ciselé et un aria des Goldberg irradiant mais décousu. La netteté de l’articulation vire parfois au prosaïsme (le célèbre "Wachet auf") mais dans l’ensemble l’interprétation marque par son volontarisme et des sonorités attrayantes, flattées par les micros. The fact that the Dresden Frauenkirche is one of the most famous sacred edifices in the world is thanks not least to its immense importance for the history of music. At all times, it was a coveted place for outstanding musicians from all over the world, as was the case for Johann Sebastian Bach, who tried out the new Silbermann organ in a concert in 1736. Unfortunately, there are no records of the works that Bach played. When the church was destroyed during the Second World War, this impressive instrument was also lost. However, the new organ from Kern & fils, built for the newly rebuilt church, is in no way inferior to its acoustically stunning predecessor. Matthias Grünert, the cantor of the Dresden Frauenkirche, set it upon himself to reconstruct Bach's great organ concert from 1736. Using his extensive knowledge of Bach, Dresden and the musical preferences of the 18th century, he has compiled several pieces from the rich fundus of Bach's organ works to create an exciting dramaturgy of what might have actually been heard in the Dresden Frauenkirche 280 years ago.
