Ces « chansonnettes », écossaises ou anglaises, ont bien du charme, dans leurs textes mélancoliques et sombres, aussi éloignés qu’il se peut de ce qu’on entend par « chansonnette » et la musique de Haydn, interprétée ici par l’ensemble orchestral « les Amis de Philippe » (piano, particulièrement « inspiré », celui de Ludger Rémy, augmenté de violon et violoncelle, Eva Salonen et Gregor Anthony) est fort éloignée, on le pense bien, du folklore qu’on pourrait imaginer. Il s’agit de poèmes dus à la dame Anne Horne, épouse Hunter, qui publia ses « Chansonnettes », en 1765, dans la revue d’Edimbourgh The Lark, avant que Haydn s’en emparât pour les mettre en musique et les publier en 1794. Le charme, c’est surtout celui d’une voix unique, celle de Dorothee Mields, aussi candide, pure et « innocente » que son visage de Madone, linéaire d’abord et fermement – même : implacablement - conduite, pour s’épanouir bientôt en un vibrato ensoleillé. On songe, irrésistiblement, au concerto pour voix et orchestre de Glière, dans la voix d’Evgenya Mirochnitchenko. Grâce à un phrasé médité, retenu, caressé l’on dirait, puis délivré voluptueusement, cette artiste force l’attention et la captive. Pas besoin d’en dire plus : écoutez ! (Danielle Porte)

Dorothee Mields is one of the leading female vocalists in the field of the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and is especially loved by the public and press for her unique timbre and moving interpretations. She is thus also for us a fortunate and perfect choice for the interpretation of the Scottish songs and English canzonettas of Joseph Haydn. Her flawless technique and her voice’s ethereal clarity mean that she knows exactly how one should sing these songs and relate the stories behind them, thus endowing them with new life. The ensemble Les Amis de Philippe assists her with great tonal sensitivity. Between 1791 and 1805 Haydn wrote arrangements for 426 Scottish songs in response to commissions from Scottish publishers and did so in the belief that he was writing folk music; in reality, however, it was cultivated salon music with a »message character.« The songs sold very well: catchy melodies penned by a star composer – that went over very well with the British. And there’s more : "Haydn invested all his experience and his talent in these arrangements, which one perhaps might term the last love of his composer’s life" (Andreas Friesenhagen).
