 Le mythe de Didon, la grande amoureuse, abandonnée par Énée, désespérée et humiliée au point de se jeter dans les flammes de sa ville de Carthage, alimenta de manière renouvelée l’inspiration artistique. D’où l’idée de consacrer un nouvel album à ce thème déjà largement pourvu au plan discographique tout en le centrant ici, ce qui en fait son originalité, sur des compositions peu enregistrées en provenance de grands maîtres baroques tels que Hasse, Sarro, Ristori, Faggioli, Vinci ou encore Jomelli, délaissant Haendel servant souvent de point de centrage à ces compilations. Il faut pour cela une soprano virtuose, capable d’exprimer fureur et désespoir tout en se tirant sans coup férir des multiples pièges tendus par des partitions des plus périlleuses. N’en doutons pas, Sunhae Im, la soprano colorature coréenne qui s’est brillamment fait connaître dans les rôles mozartiens avant d’élargir son répertoire du baroque jusqu’à la musique contemporaine, possède la technique, la voix, l’allant et le charisme pour nous entraîner sur ces pages follement audacieuses. Elle est ici superbement accompagnée par Andreas Küpper et l’ensemble Teatro Del Mondo qui lui tissent une partie d’orchestre à la hauteur de la prestation globale fort bien enregistrée, du reste, comme en a l’habitude CPO. Under the title of Didone abbandonata she now interprets opera arias and cantatas for cpo, some of them with strings, others with continuo, by Niccolò Jommelli Giovanni Ristori, Johann Adolph Hasse, Nicola Antonio Porpora, and other composers. She is accompanied by Teatro del Mondo, an ensemble that has set itself the task of performing Baroque music tracing its origins to changing times. Dido, the Queen of Carthage who fell in love with Aeneas but whom he then left behind on his voyage from Troy to Rome, is one of the great tragic female figures of antiquity. Operas and some cantatas such as those by Ristori and Faggioli attest to the timeless fascination of this story and to its significance for the Italian Baroque opera.
