Daniel-Ben Pienaar, piano

Quiconque a déjà écouté Glen Gould jouant quelques pages de William Byrd (avec Sweelinck et Gibbons, 1964) au piano peut rester définitivement marqué par son interprétation. Souplesse et agilité du contrepoint, tactus naturel et surtout cette capacité unique à faire émerger le chant, de faire vivre la partition et l'instrument simultanément. Plus près de nous, Kit Armstrong en donnait une vision plus exhaustive mais délibérément esthétisante sur un grand piano Steinway (DG). Le pianiste israélien Daniel-Ben Pienaar nous livre ici en deux CD une compilation de 42 pièces issues de deux recueils principaux "My Lady Nevell's Book (1591) et "Parthénia" (1601) contenant principalement des pavanes, des gaillardes, horn-pipes, grounds et autres variations. Dans sa notice fournie, Pienaar n'est pas à court d'arguments pour justifier l'apport du piano dans ce type de répertoire. Hormis la ductilité, la sensualité digitale propre aux toucher de l'ivoire (cf. Kit Armstrong), son jeu pourrait tout à fait convenir sur un clavecin traditionnel. L'articulation est soignée, les ornements sont foisonnants, Pienaar use d'un certain legato dans les pièces lentes et adopte des tempi très enlevés pour d'autres sans doute pour éviter l'uniformité. L'ensemble est fort bien conduit et témoigne d'une réelle appropriation des partitions par l'interprète. (Jérôme Angouillant)
