 Né en Russie, ce compositeur polonais est réputé pour ses recueils de pièces pédagogiques. Pour la plupart, les 31 partitions réunies dans cet album n’appartiennent pas à cette catégorie. Elles n’ont jamais été publiées et bénéficient de leur premier enregistrement mondial. Avant la Première Guerre mondiale, Labunski fut ami de Heifetz, Milstein, Rachmaninov et Prokofiev. Il étudia auprès de Blumenfeld, professeur notamment d’Horowitz. Après la révolution soviétique, il s’établit en Pologne puis mena une carrière de concertiste, en Europe, dans les années vingt. En 1928, il s’établit aux Etats-Unis. L’évolution de l’écriture de Labunski est étonnante. Bien que l’on ait perdu ses partitions d’avant 1917, l’auditeur perçoit nombre d’influences. Les danses polonaises se combinent avec les harmonies françaises, celles d’un Poulenc, notamment. La veine romantique se colore d’un folklore d’Europe centrale. Cette musique est profondément nostalgique, bavarde et narrative puis subitement épurée. L’humour, parfois, y fait une incursion étonnante, à la manière d’un Prokofiev sans l’irrévérence de celui-ci, toutefois. Au fil du temps, le langage s’épure et Labunski révèle l’ampleur de son travail consacré au rythme et à l’articulation. Le Nocturne, le Poème et Krakowiak sont pour deux pianos. On songe plus volontiers au lyrisme d’un Rachmaninov. Belle interprétation des deux pianistes. (Jean dandrésy) The composer Wiktor Labunski is almost completely unknown today. A few of his compositions were published before WWII, and after the war, in 1947, PWM printed a small collection of his piano music for children. His music was still seen in print in the US in the 1950’s, but it slowly disappeared, leaving space for younger generations of composers. Today in the Unites States, one can still purchase Labunski’s Four Variations on a Theme by Paganini, a charming, award-winning pedagogical composition, occasionally still performed by aspiring young pianists for contests and auditions. The goal of this recording project was to present the complete solo piano works along with the complete original works for two pianos by Wiktor Labunski. As a bonus, we have also included Labunski’s arrangement of Krakowiak by Wladyslaw Zelenski. The ‘oldest’ piece on this disc is Wladco serc. It was written in 1918. The updated version of his Rustic Dance is in a sense the newest (completed in 1966),. A majority of the works presented on this CD have never been published. Unfortunately, we do not know which compositions Labunski considered the most representative of his work. We can retrace his development as a musician while following the chronology of his compositions, although the order of music presented on this CD follows a musical, not chronological, sense.
