 Ranzato composa dès 1900, tout en menant une carrière de violoniste. Chambriste, il occupa en outre le poste de premier violon à la Scala sous la direction de Toscanini. Il fut aussi apprécié comme chef d'orchestre. Ses œuvres instrumentales furent très tôt oubliées, et il n'est plus mentionné, dans les dictionnaires, que comme l'auteur d'une vingtaine d'opérettes, d'un opéra et de musique pour le cinéma. Ce CD offre, en création mondiale, un aperçu de sa production instrumentale, sous la forme d'un choix de pièces pour violon et piano. On sent chez ce compositeur un don certain et un réel bonheur d'écriture pour susciter en des pièces bien construites, virtuoses et exigeantes sur le plan technique (cf. par exemple la sérénade andalouse), des atmosphères caractéristiques des différents registres pratiqués à l'époque : goût pour l’exotisme (Danse espagnole, tambourin arabe, sérénade andalouse, caprice hongrois…), répertoire sentimental et intime hérité du romantisme (berceuse, romance sans parole, sérénade galante, aubade), expression recueillie (méditation ou évocation de l'Ave Maria), pièces descriptives (papillons, coucou, libellule). On ne s'ennuie pas un instant : des joyaux délicats, touchants, ingénieux, de bon goût. Invention, distinction et poésie sont aussi au rendez-vous. Belle interprétation engagée et séduisante. (Bertrand Abraham) The fame enjoyed by Virgilio Ranzato, composer, concert performer and appreciated conductor, declined inexorably at the end of the Second World War when only two yet very famous operettas remained in his performed repertoire: «Cin-ci -là», and «Il paese dei campanelli». In fact Ranzato was a prolific and multifaceted musician. He composed symphonic poems, chamber and orchestra music, danceable songs, soundtracks, one opera and twenty operettas, making him one of the most central characters in the musical panorama of the early twentieth century. Paolo Mora and Milo Martani on this album address the vast repertoire the composer dedicated to the duo par excellence of chamber music: the works for violin and piano, delivering an interesting crosssection of the most interesting themes of the musical literature of the time: serenades, prayers, dances, exotic atmospheres, intimate or carefree moments flourishing thanks to the writing of Ranzato, skilfully moving between instrumental virtuosity and the pathos of the crepuscular aura of the beginning of the new century.
