A Florence, Leyla Gencer et Guiseppe Taddei avaient assuré la renaissance de ce sombre drame où l’Histoire - la lutte des lombards contre les troupes de Barberousse - se lie à l’intime. Les amours empêchés de Lida et d’Arrigo donnant à Verdi l’occasion du premier portrait d’époux fou à force de jalousie qu'il portera à son acmé avec Otello. La Scala répondait deux ans plus tard, offrant à la direction emportée de Gianandrea Gavazzeni le ténor qui avait manqué à l’édition Florentine : Franco Corelli est admirable de pur héroïsme vocal, quitte à surveiller moins son chant, peu importe, cet Arrigo ardant ne s’oubliera plus, faisant d’autant pâlir Antonietta Stella : elle a beau soigner le style, sa Lida ne peut faire oublier celle de Leyla Gencer dont deux soirées sont documentées, celle de Florence et celle de Trieste (avec Joao Gibin, magnifique). Mais comment se passer du Rolando d’Ettore Bastianini, si justement fêté par les milanais. Cette alliance de chant stylé et de mots mordants, cette ligne dardée, cette fureur contenue que la violence du timbre fait mentir sont simplement historiques. La Battaglia di Legnano is among the least recorded operas of the Verdi repertoire. Currently the only studio edition available is the Philips’ conducted by Lamberto Gardelli in the Seventies. However, prior to that famous edition is this recording made at La Scala in 1961 which enjoyed great fame and diffusion especially in the Eighties and Nineties. Currently this famous live version has been unavailable for a long time. For this reason, and for the excellent quality of the sound recording, we have decided to make this important document available again. Naturally, a new equalization of the sound source has been carried out, making the original recording as natural as possible. The vocal cast remains one of the greatest possible in the entire history of recording.
