Sigmund Romberg Le Prince Étudiant Opérette Petersen Wortig Blees Schirrmacher Mauceri

Il est probable que le nom du Hongrois Sigmund Romberg, émigré aux Etats-Unis, ne vous dise rien. Pourtant, son opérette "The Student Prince", fut la pièce la plus jouée de Broadway entre 1924 et le milieu des années trente. Ce succès s’expliqua probablement par une histoire située dans une Europe idyllique pas encore ravagée par la Première Guerre Mondiale où l’amour sincère doit finalement céder la place au devoir de la charge. Une intrigue amoureuse illuminée par une musique allègre très bien écrite directement issue de la tradition viennoise mais chantée en Anglais. Une curiosité, fort agréable à écouter n’ayant rien à envier aux Lehar ou Stolz restés célèbres. L’interprétation réunissant des chanteurs de grande qualité, quoiqu’à peu près inconnus, est d’une grande cohérence. On remarquera particulièrement la très belle voix de la soprano Anja Petersen et un convaincant ténor en Prince, Dominiik Wortig. Le très bel orchestre WDR de Cologne, sous la baguette inspirée de John Mauceri, s’en donne à cœur-joie parvenant à nous entrainer dans son enthousiasme. A very curious story surrounds this operetta that celebrated its premiere in New York in 1924, became a colossal success, was penned by an American composer born as Sigmund Rosenberg in Imperial and Royal Austria, and evokes glorious boyhood and student days in Biedermeier Heidelberg. The Student Prince by Sigmund Romberg was so popular that Hollywood filmed it not once but twice: in 1927 as a silent film by Ernst Lubitsch and in 1954 as a sound film. Like the later musical The Sound of Music, The Student Prince created an ideal vision of Old Europe as an American stage fantasy. Sigmund Romberg’s musical significance rests on the fact that it was he who brought the European operetta – and especially the Viennese operetta – to Broadway during the first half of the twentieth century, successfully Americanized it, and offered decisive compositional and dramaturgical impulses to the musical then taking shape as an independent American art form. The great American conductor John Mauceri has lent his devoted support to the rediscovery of this original musical gem – also in a highly readable contribution in our booklet.
