Issu d'une famille de musiciens, élève de Carl Reinicke, Georg Alfred Schumann (1866-1952) a forgé sa notoriété au cours d'une longue carrière de pianiste, compositeur, chef d'orchestre, professeur et maître de chœur. Romantique tardif, il a abordé presque tous les genres au sein d'un catalogue dépassant une centaine de compositions parmi lesquelles la musique de piano et les pièces chorales occupent une place prépondérante. Ecrites au tournant du XXe siècle, les deux œuvres de musique de chambre réunies ici sont très directement influencées par Brahms. Ainsi, la Sonate pour violoncelle et piano prend manifestement pour modèle la Première Sonate de Brahms (opus 38) dont elle partage la même tonalité, une coupe et une facture identiques. C’est également d’un lied de Brahms dont dérive le thème de son andante central. Parcouru et animé par un souffle large et puissant, développant de séduisants motifs mélodiques, constamment soutenu par une belle inspiration, l'ambitieux Quatuor pour piano s'inscrit clairement dans la lignée de ceux de Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann et Brahms. Organisé en quatre vastes mouvements et empreint de sonorités orchestrales, comme ses illustres prédécesseurs il regarde résolument vers la symphonie. No, Georg Schumann was not a descendant of Robert Schumann, but he did hail from the same productive cultural landscape in Saxony. During his early years he developed into a brilliant and virtuoso pianist who even as a youth was able to perform demanding piano concertos. However, he was by no means merely interested in solo piano recital. Already at the Leipzig Conservatory he performed chamber music with his fellow students, and chamber music would accompany him throughout his life. Schumann presented his Cello Sonata dedicated to Hugo Becker, one of the most important cellists of the time, at the Thirty-Fourth Tonkünstlerversammlung in Mainz in 1898. Here he is very much a progressive harmonist and in no way mechanically employs the classical form but instead endows it with variations. If the Cello Sonata, especially in the concluding movement, is distinguished by an almost superabundant wealth of ideas, then in his Piano Quartet Schumann concentrates on a few shapes and creates connections beyond movement boundaries, so that a high degree of unity results. He adds the viola to it all, thus enhancing the work’s full instrumental sound. Schumann premiered the quartet himself in 1901 in Berlin, where he had been appointed to the post of director of the Sing-Akademie, and during subsequent years performed it many times in Dessau, Dresden, Leipzig, Bremen, and other cities.
