Ce « Schumann Concertant » regroupe les deux op. 92 et 134 pour piano et orchestre, une extrapolation de l'op. 86 originellement conçu pour quatre cors et le Concerto op.54. Le pianiste Matthias Kirschnereit aidé d’un orchestre d'une belle ampleur (le Konzerthausorchester Berlin dirigé par Jan Willem de Vriend) aborde chaque page avec un jeu d'une grande fluidité, alliant dynamique et articulation, le feu et la mécanique horlogère. L'op. 86 gagne en clarté ce qu'elle perd en mystère (le timbre des cors). L'Introduktion und Allegro appassionato dégage une énergie passionnée tout à fait à propos et jubilatoire. Idem pour un Allegro de concert labile et tempétueux dont la subtile progression menée par le soliste et l'orchestre témoigne d'une véritable expertise de la partition. Le Concerto n'est pas en reste et frise lui aussi les sommets. Un pianiste souverain, un orchestre réactif et nuancé. Regrettons dans cet allant héroïque juste un défaut de tendresse et de miasmes proprement schumanniens. L’œuvre archi-rebattue jouit d'une nouvelle jeunesse, grâce soit rendue à ces interprètes et à une prise de son fabuleuse de spatialité et de précision ! (Jérôme Angouillant)

When Matthias Kirschnereit talks about Schumann, his eyes light up. His upcoming album Concertant features both the world famous Piano Concerto and the lesser known, yet no less impressive Concert Pieces for piano and orchestra. It's a perfect match: Matthias Kirschnereit, the "Poet at the Piano" (according to Süddeutsche Zeitung), and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under Jan Willem de Vriend play Schumann's large-scale work for piano and orchestra. All of the musicians are experienced, skilled artists and they have produced a performance clearly based on knowledge of the work and musical experience. The album's concept is impressive: Schumann's Piano Concerto, the most frequently recorded work in the history of the CD, is presented as the highlight, but also as a sort of encore after the three lesser known Concert Pieces opp. 86, 92 and 134.
