Salutaire réédition d'un album enregistré en 1983 en République démocratique allemande et qui n'avait pas alors retenu suffisamment l'attention en Europe de l'Ouest. Timm Jürnjakob, premier violoncelle solo du Gewandhaus de Lepizig se révèle tout simplement merveilleux dans le Concerto pour violoncelle de Schumann. C'est clair, sensible mais sans afféterie. Jamais de sentimentalisme facile, d'abandon à un romantisme superficiel, de vibrato intempestif comme on en trouve, dans ce concerto, chez certains solistes pourtant autrement réputés. Une sobriété qui n'est pas de la réserve, mais qui procède d'un sens supérieur de l'équilibre, et qui est tout simplement la marque d'une grande distinction. Les choses sont dites, posées, avec une évidence et une simplicité derrière laquelle se perçoit l'acuité, l'attention du grand chambriste qu'est aussi ce musicien. La direction de Masur est un modèle de limpidité, de tenue, de précision. Un troisième mouvement sublime, où rien ne pèse, où la saveur de chaque détail est là, mais simplement là. On retrouve ces qualités dans un Tchaikovski très subtilement ajusté. Remarquable travail du timbre et de la sonorité qui donne lieu à une vraie fête sonore (en particulier dans les dernières variations). On sent dans les 2 suites de Bach pour violoncelle seul données en complément une grande humilité. Tout cela coule de source. Et pourtant quel art ! Un grand disque. (Bertrand Abraham)

Jürnjakob Timm was for many decades Principal Solo Cellist with the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig and is today a member of the Gewandhaus Quartet. The cellist has performed as soloist with orchestras in Germany, other European countries, Japan, South America and the USA. In the course of numerous concert tours with the Gewandhaus Orchestra he played cello concertos of the Classical, Romantic and modern eras under the baton of Kurt Masur. The present recording was the first orchestra recording by Jürnjakob Timm for the classical Eterna label. Together with Kurt Masur, the Gewandhaus Orchestra’s director for many years, he recorded two standard works for cello and orchestra in the Paul Gerhardt Church in Leipzig in 1983: Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor and Tchaikovsky’s famous Rococo Variations. December 2015 was marked by the death of the longserving Principal Conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and artist of world renown Kurt Masur. “He won over his critics in the course of his long life as a personality distinguished by his bearing, which surpassed music, and as a conductor whose ever more finely nuanced pragmatism of interpretation made the language of the orchestra intelligible, comprehensible, tangible.
