 Ce qui frappe à la première écoute de l’ultime sonate de Schubert (1797-1828) interprétée par Ayako Ito, c’est la sonorité du pianoforte du facteur Christopher Clarke, copie de l’an 2000 d’un Conrad Graf viennois de 1826. Clarke, le maître clunisien, y déploie tout son art des registrations entre des médiums nimbés d’un velours harmonique insondable, des graves à la voix sombre puissante et rauque, des aigus taillés dans un cristal angélique. Trois strates très distinctes qui en chacune d’elles offre à la pianiste japonaise des couleurs infinies et convoque une image inédite de ce chef d’œuvre tant de fois gravé. Alors pour magnifier cet ineffable bijou Ayako Ito va puiser lentement dans les dernières ressources contemplatives du compositeur romantique, ce cher Franz qui nous conte avec un regard lucide, tendre et empli d’une profonde tristesse les derniers soubresauts d’une si belle vie, simple et où règne l’unique amour de la musique et de l’amitié. La phrase musicale, à l’égal du plus bel alexandrin, retrace sans cesse les sfumatos d’un homme qui contemple une dernière fois, dans le miroir de l’existence, les brumes de la vallée, le glas paradisiaque d’un cortège funèbre qui s’éloigne et sonne jusqu’à l’ultime vibration, puis danse un länder emporté par une chevauchée macabre telle la ballade de Lenore. La sonate en Sib majeur (1828) n’aura jamais été aussi analytique sous les doigts paisibles d’Ayako Ito qui achève de nous émouvoir dans une lecture évidente, presque enfantine, du théâtre schubertien dans ce qui fût tout simplement appelé les trois pièces posthumes pour piano… Et j’ai pleuré ! (Florestan de Marucaverde) Nowadays, in concert halls, we generally see a single type of piano that normally has 88 keys and is normally black. Things were quite different in the Vienna of the 19th century: the piano had fewer keys, was decorated with wooden inlay and had no steel subframe. All this made them sound quite different. Conrad Graf was one of the finest builders of pianofortes in Vienna in the period from 1820-40. And Franz Schubert was living in the same city. We can revive a rich, warm, singing, powerful and even orchestral sound on Graf's pianofortes. His pianos feature the Viennese action or “Prellzungenmechanik”, with their hammers built up from many layers of leather. These hammers allow the performer to impart subtle nuances and dynamic contrasts. Of course, the pianos are straight-strung. The player can alter the tonal colour using four pedals, with one of the pedals specific to the pianoforte being the moderator. When the moderator pedal is depressed, a strip of cashmere slips between the hammers and the strings. Christopher Clarke (1947) built the instrument used for this recording in 2000, as a facsimile of Conrad Graf's pianoforte no. 995. Clarke's pianoforte always inspires me. I find it a miraculous instrument. The utter precision of the mechanism lets us explore the finest gradations and introduce the most subtle nuances – singing, speaking or whispering. It is a mechanism that demands a high technical mastery from the player.
