Pas du meilleur Richard Jones. Quelle idée d’enfermer la tragédie biblique de Saint-Saëns dans une grande boite où tous se serrent dès que le chœur nombreux parait. Cet entassement anti-musical perdra le chœur plus d’une fois et gênéra visiblement Seokjong Baek, Samson grand teint qui donne au héros une dimension tragique inédite. La voix est splendide, dans le clairon comme dans le grave, dans l’élan comme dans le pianissimo. Face à un tel Samson, Elina Garanca campe une Dalila idéale, de physique, d’incarnation, de voix simplement, qu’elle ouvre de plus en plus vers des graves somptueux, dans un français exemplaire qui magnifie encore son chant si stylé. Le style, c’est bien ce qui rendra cette version précieuse à qui voudra bien seulement l’entendre, si finement dirigé par Antonio Pappano, attentif à l’orient, au stupre, mais surtout au drame. Comprimari acceptables de chant, mais au français souvent exotique, sinon pour l’Abimélech percutant de Blaise Malada. Vous pourrez essayer de voir la transposition assez paresseuse de Richard Jones (Dalila habite un préfabriqué, le reste à l’avenant), mais écoutez plutôt. Multi-Olivier Award winning director Richard Jones returns to The Royal Opera to stage this spectacular fin-de-siècle masterpiece, not performed at Covent Garden since 2004. Elina Garanca stars as the Philistine Dalila, SeokJong Baek as the inspiring Jewish hero Samson and Antonio Pappano conducts the full forces of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. With superb singing in solos and duets of great intimacy and fervour, gorgeous music with thrilling orchestral interludes, and splendid choral numbers for the Royal Opera Chorus – this is a performance to remember.
