 Diplomate, ingénieur, compositeur, professeur, et d’un certain Witold Lutoslawski, Piotr Maszynski a vécu bien des vies. Né en 1855 et mort en 1934, son esthétique n’hésite pas : elle est franchement post-romantique. Dux nous propose un deuxième volume de ses mélodies – on ne sait s’il s’agira d’une intégrale, mais on l’espère – inédites au disque. Atmosphères crépusculaires et sensibilité aux grandes présences de la nature, on se trouve quelque part entre Schumann et Rachmaninov, et on se laisse volontiers submerger par ces harmonies sensuelles et parfois vénéneuses. Pour nous servir de guides, la mezzo Agnieszka Rehlis et la soprano Anna Siminska se complètent à merveille : la première déploie un splendide velours dans les graves et séduit malgré un vibrato envahissant mais bien contrôlé, la seconde, timbre adamantin et émission instrumentale apporte sa juvénilité aux mélodies les plus légères de ce récital. Autre talentueuse mezzo, Lilianna Zalesinska rejoint notre soprano pour trois duos qui ne sont que charme et fraîcheur. Au piano, Jolanta Pszczolkowska-Pawlik varie les atmosphères, écoute et relance, déploie une palette de couleurs idéalement assorties celle de ses solistes. (Olivier Gutierrez) The presented recording is already a second DUX album featuring the compositional oeuvre of Piotr Maszynski (1855–1934). Out of the composer’s rich vocal works, further songs were selected, the present recording of which is the world recording premiere. Maszynski was particularly associated with the artistic life of Warsaw – it was there that he created, worked in institutions promoting culture (he was, among others, director of the Opera) and founded the “Lutnia” Singing Society, which has never stopped operating. He preferred songs accompanied by the piano, most often solo, but also duets, which can be heard on the album. Song is a special artistic medium – it combines music and poetry, sensitivity to words with a sense of melody. The times in which Maszynski composed were exceptionally conducive to such an expression, still embedded in the spirit of neo-romantic sensitivity. At the same time, the composer would search for topics in various aspects of the surrounding reality, translated into lyrics by contemporary poets. Maszynski’s vocal works were interpreted by prominent Polish musicians: singers Agnieszka Rehlis (mezzo-soprano), Liliana Zalesinska (mezzo-soprano) and Anna Siminska (soprano). They are accompanied by pianist Jolanta Pszczólkowska-Pawlik.
