Lapin, cage à oiseaux, paire de skis, machine à coudre, parapluie, char d'assaut. Chez le cartooniste Tex Avery, un Séraphin Lampion prestigitateur n'est jamais au dépourvu d'exploiter encore un petit quelque chose du filon sans fond de son gibus renversé. C'est pareil chez les éditeurs de disques avec cette hyperinflation du baroque instrumental, cet ancien dont le joli placide plaît volontiers à tout le monde. Allons-y donc cette fois-ci avec ce Pietro Degli Antoni (1639-1720). Cornettiste et violoniste, c'est un représentant italien de l'école de Bologne, où il fut notamment maître de chapelle. Il fit partie du Concerto Palatino, et surtout de la fameuse Accademia Filarmonica (qui existe toujours !). Les meilleurs défilèrent là, issus par exemple de l'entourage du duc de Modène, et il s'y fit un ami de Corelli. Détail important, il épousa Maria Maddalena Musi, cantatrice célèbre sous le nom de ''La Mignatta''. Et cela s'entend, en quelque sorte, dans ce recueil de courtes sonates (publié en 1676, avant un opus 5 paru dix ans après) où semble primer le style vocal. Autre caractéristique : des mouvements lents adoptant souvent le style du récitatif ou de l'aria. Aussi a-t-on pu parler à l'époque de ''cantates instrumentales''. Avec son ensemble, Alessandro Ciccolini rend parfaitement toute la noblesse un peu égale de cette musique : il est donc possible de se baigner plus d'une fois dans le même fleuve tranquille. Egalement compositeur, précisons que cet interprète s'est frotté à la classe de violon baroque d'Enrico Gatti à Milan. Par ailleurs, c'est à lui que l'on doit la reconstitution de l'opéra de Vivaldi, Motezuma. (Gilles-Daniel Percet)

Here’s another composer plucked from the dusty libraries of obscurity by Brilliant Classics, so the music can be heard on its own merits, in new, well-researched editions and up-to-date, historically informed performances. Pietro degli Antoni (1639-1720) was born, died and made his career in Bologna, where he was maestro di capella in three of the city’s churches. His activity as a composer embraced a wide range of genres, from instrumental music to vocal works for chamber performance, for church services and for the opera stage. Apart from a collection of sonatas and versetti for the organ (including a pastorale), his instrumental output comprises two collections of dances for the violin, and two sonata sets for solo violin and basso continuo that reveal a highly individual style which anticipates the brilliant style of Arcangelo Corelli, another Bolognan. There are 12 sonatas in Op.4, all four-, five and six-movement works – there are 58 tracks on the disc – which present vividly coloured snapshots of the Italian Baroque. Even most of the slow movements last barely a minute, enough to spin a melody over some figured bass chords, with titles such as affettuoso, aria posata, aria grave, and posato, revealing their debt to the vocal style. This adoption of recitative and aria is a distinctive trait typical of degli Antoni’s work, one rarely found in his contemporaries, that justifies defining the works as cantate strumentali, or instrumental cantatas. Il coro d’Arcadia is a Baroque group of musicians named after an 18th century ensemble in Rome, and led by the violinist Alessandro Ciccolini, who has also edited and reconstructed rare works by Vivaldi to be performed by the late Alan Curtis and his Complesso Barocco ensemble.
