Barbara Strozzi is undoubtedly the most important figure in the history of the seventeenth century Venetian cantata and even today, her music appeals to musicians, singers and audiences around the world. Although the concept of “woman-composer” is, in itself, attractive to our modern age, it is definitely not enough to justify our interest in her music today. Barbara Strozzi created a lively repertoire of various styles and forms, expressing the vices, passions and virtues of human beings in infinite ways thanks to her unique sense of drama, virtuosity and extravagance, all with a touch of humor. The fact that she successfully published an impressive eight books of arias, cantatas and madrigals illustrates just how outstanding she was in her time.
