Septième volume d’une intégrale de l’œuvre symphonique d’Andrzej Panufnik (1914-1991) par l’Orchestre de la Radio Polonaise rendant justice au compositeur polonais dont la vie bouleversée est emblématique de son siècle. Son talent de compositeur et chef d’orchestre le propulse rapidement aux plus hautes fonctions musicales dans la Pologne communiste. Chantre obligé malgré lui du réalisme socialiste, il choisit la liberté en 1954 pendant un concert à Zürich. Réfugié en Angleterre où il se consacre à la composition il ne retournera en Pologne (où sa musique était proscrite jusqu’en 1977) qu’en 1990. Anobli par la Reine en 1991 il mourra la même année. La symphonie des Sphères (7ème sur 12) est en 9 mouvements courts. Construite sur un thème générateur dense passant à travers tous les instruments, cette musique fait la part belle aux rythmes et aux timbres (cuivres, vents, percussions), avec un art consommé des contrastes dynamiques. Un concerto pour basson en 5 mouvements, « Paysage » poème symphonique mélancolique pour cordes, et «Chant d’Amour » sur un poème anglais du XVIème siècle complètent cet album illustrant selon le compositeur lui-même sa « recherche d’un équilibre vrai entre sentiment et intellect, cœur et cerveau, impulsion et dessein ». Andrzej Panufnik’s fifth symphony, the Sinfonia di Sfere of 1975, is regarded by many as his symphonic masterpiece. For example, the Panufnik expert Christoph Schlüren writes as follows : "Challenging instrumental virtuosity, glistening dissonance formations in extreme registers, frenetically gripping intensifications, and low points ebbing away into nothingness are realized with the highest mastery in orchestral matters and contribute to an erratically moving dramaturgical whole. The Sinfonia di Sfere numbers among the milestones of an individual, nonconformist modernity in the second half of the twentieth century and merits comparison with outstanding orchestral works by composers such as Ligeti, Messiaen, and Vivier". The Bassoon Concerto of 1985 has an especially moving story behind it : "When I began this work, I heard news of the torture and murder of the Catholic priest Popieluszko by the secret police. I immediately resolved to compose my concerto in memory of his martyrdom".
