Qui trop embrasse mal étreint. Mariame Clément a jeté dans un certain désordre une profusion d’idées dans sa mise en scène suractive dont le point initial pouvait intéresser : Hoffman tourne le fim de sa vie, commencée en clochard poussant son caddie et finie de même, rejetant loin toute tentation humoristique : l’acte d’Antonia sera un carnage, et de bout en bout la proposition dispense un gout de cendre. Débordée par cette suractivité, par le flot des idées et des propositions, le spectateur du Festspielhaus a dut être noyé, du moins ici Michael Beyer éclaire les points forts de la mise en scène en les saisissant avec l’acuité de ses caméras. Ceux qui ne supporteront pas les audaces du spectacle écouterons du moins l’incarnation majeure que Benjamin Bernheim offre du poète, chant stylé qui sait ne pas masquer le désarroi, l’illusion, l’appassionato et même l’amer, un tout grand Hoffmann qui fera paraitre le Diable bien chantant de Christian van Horn jamais dangereux. Les quatre héroïnes féminines selon Kathryn Lewek (elle est aussi Stella) restent une gageure qui attend encore d’être accomplie. Marc Minkowski se régale des Wiener Philharmoniker, mais comme ses Contes sont constamment noirs, et retrouve quelques chanteurs qui font merveille : Marc Mauillon, valets irrésistibles, Jerôme Varnier, l’élégance même pour Crespel et Luther, Philippe-Nicolas Martin pour les silhouettes d’Herman et de Schlemi, et une merveille, le doublé Muse/Nicklausse de Kate Lindsey.(Discophilia - Artalinna.com) (Jean-Charles Hoffelé)

Offenbach goes Hollywood: Mariame Clément’s production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann transforms ist titular character into a storyteller of a different kind. The different acts, which are based on short stories by E.T.A. Hoffmann, take the audience on a journey through the world of cinema, from a 70s sci-fi flick over a costume drama to a feverish experimental sequence. The three love interests Olympia, Antonia and Giulietta are portrayed by American soprano Kathryn Lewek, who “impresses with brilliantly assertive coloratura, melting cantilenas and pulsating drama” (Drehpunktkultur). At the centre of this tragic tale of unrequited love is Hoffmann himself, stepping into the role of a script writer and film director in this production. The incredibly charismatic Benjamin Bernheim “splendidly cele brates the invasive tragedy of his character. Sound, expression and presence could not be better combined” (Der Standard). Kate Lindsey, who portrays the muse disguised as Hoffmann’s friend Niklausse is a joy to watch and listen to as she “absorbs Clément's energy of ideas and gilds her vocal tour de force with scenic exuberance” (Der Standard).
