Un argument en or : Stavros, entrepreneur grec spécialisé dans l’enlèvement de touristes, place habilement les rançons de ses « clients » chez un banquier londonien, dont il capture par hasard la fille, Mary-Ann, et en tombe amoureux. Sa propre fille Photini est courtisée par un militaire américain, Harris. Ce-dernier s’est mis en tête d’arrêter Stavros, qu’il connaît sous une autre identité, plus respectable : le Prince de Parnes. Quiproquos successifs et happy end attendu. Le public rit de bon cœur – il s’agit d’un live, une seule soirée aura suffi. Le tenor Matthias Klink campe un Stavros ambigu par son chant fruste, un rien sauvage, sous lequel perce une certaine noblesse. Le timbre solaire de Ralf Simon (Harris) se marie idéalement au soprano capiteux de Chen Reiss (Photini). Ulf Schirmer, naguère pilier de la Staatsoper de Vienne, dirige avec un sens inné du rubato cette partition méconnue qui ne manque pas de charmes : final du prologue avec violon obligé, jubilatoire Marche des voleurs, nostalgie de l’intermezzo «Résignation », quintette de l’acte II, je ne peux les citer tous. Among those in the know, Das Fuerstenkind (The Prince’s Child) has always been an insider’s tip in Franz Lehár’s œuvre, and the composer himself regarded this robbers’ tale from Greece premiered in 1909 as one of his best works. It was also his problem child because it never became a sensational success. The reason may have been that Das Fuerstenkind, even more than other Lehár operettas, did too much blurring of the generic boundaries between the opera and the operetta. He had never composed more like the opera in the sense of an elevated singspiel tone. Contemporary critics were also aware of this fact: »Lehár finds natural atmospheres, sets the landscapes into tones, and also in the end does indeed give the operetta what it must have in the way of charming dance pieces gracefully strolling along. He even does an excellent job with the leitmotifs of the music drama.« Moreover, with the aria "Schweig, zagendes Herz" (Hush, timid heart) also known as "Resignation", Lehár succeeded in formulating his most gripping and noblest musical idea of all.
