13 avril 1965, le Wuerttenburg Staatstheater de Stuttgart accueille la création de la nouvelle chorégraphie de John Cranko : rien moins qu’un ballet sur le livret de l’Eugène Onégin de Tchaïkovski assemblant diverses musiques du compositeur. L’ouvrage fut d’abord destiné au Royal Opera House qui le refusa. Nommé à Stuttgart, Cranko emmena son ballet dans ses valises, il deviendra un des spectacles phares du nouveau ballet germanique. La reprise de 2017 a conservé intacte une chorégraphie exigeante qui allie dans une langue impeccable des styles très différents, éléments de danse moderne mêlés à des idiomes folkloriques, performance physique d’une danse parfois acrobatique, éléments de pantomime où Cranko fait éclater son génie de la caractérisation psychologique. Au sommet de cette soirée, l’Onegin impérieux et terrible de Friedemann Vogel dont la prestance égale la noirceur. Mais la Tatiana volontaire et pourtant brisée d’Alicia Amatriain n’est pas en reste, tout comme le Lensky enthousiaste de David Moore, d’une jeunesse éclatante. En revoyant ce grand ballet, je ne peux m’empêcher de songer à ce nouveau style imposé par John Cranko : il aura ouvert la voix à Jiri Kylian et à John Neumeier, rien moins. Un passeur dont on peut voir ici un des chefs-d’œuvre, à l’égal de son Roméo et Juliette immédiatement entré dans la légende. Onegin mérite de l’y rejoindre. With Onegin, John Cranko secured his place in the pantheon of great 20th century choreographers. He created the three act work for the Stuttgart Ballet – of which he was Director – in 1965 and revised the ballet two years later.
