Trois Symphonies du bohémien Johann Baptist Vanhal enregistrées ici ont été composées avant et après son voyage en Italie entre 1767 et 1768, à mi-parcours de sa carrière de compositeur, celle plus tardive en La Majeur date elle de 1773-1774. Deux sont en mode mineur, les deux autres en majeur. Dans leur genre, on y entend assez naturellement de frappants échos des symphonies de Haydn, de Dittersdorf et même de Mozart (K 183). La première Symphonie en Sol Mineur comporte dans ses quatre mouvement (dont un menuet) de jolies séquences de violon concertato. De même pour l'autre Symphonie en mineur, Vanhal ménage quelques solos de bois et cuivres (Andante). Les deux autres en Majeur mêlent habilement une opulente orchestration et des thèmes charmants (Andante) et roboratifs (Allegro). La Symphonie en Fa offre elle aussi un menuet d'une belle plasticité. Sous la direction aguerrie du chef croate Ivan Repusic, l'Orchestre de la Radio de Munich livre une interprétation de haut niveau de ces œuvres caractéristiques du sturm und drang viennois. "Indeed, Vienna is so rich in composers [...], that it is but just to allow it to be, among German cities, the imperial seat of music, as well as of power." Sir Charles Burney, the famous observer of European music, was quite correct. This city on the Danube was bubbling over with talents and masters who all made their livelihood there. This included Johann Baptist Wanhal, one of the innumerable Bohemians that tried their luck in the shadow of the court palace. He contributed many beautiful pieces to his preferred medium of instrumental music. The small selection of the present production alone well demonstrates that Wanhal was able to hold his own in the symphonic genre next to Joseph Haydn, who was seven years his senior. Subtle orchestral colours, a fine sense for dramatic events, especially in the minor keys, and striking melodies are characteristic of the creations that were enjoyed not only in the old imperial city.
