 Ce n’est plus un secret, au centre des opéras de Janacek, de tout ses opéras, un personnage supplémentaire - et décisif - s’invite : l’orchestre. Au point que les chefs d’orchestre ont voulu les faire leurs et les porter au concert. Tout récemment, Manfred Honeck s’est assemblé une Suite d’après "Jenufa" où tout l’opéra se trouve synthétisé. C’est quasiment de la musique de film, les puristes hurleront mais j’adore, car le geste impérieux qui la parcourt dit tout de l’univers de "Jenufa",et d’abord sa détresse. C’est par cette reconstruction pertinente que Tomas Netopil ouvre son disque, brillant, un peu lisse parfois, mais utile, d’abord par cette "Jenufa" d’orchestre, ensuite par le décalque plus terrifiant que Jaroslav Smolka tira de "Kata Kabanova", où soudain Netopil trouve les sonorités âpres, le rythme fiévreux de l’original. C’est que Smolka a réalisé un travail d’orfèvre, une vraie composition où sont repris les procédés d’écriture de Janacek. Cela sonne avec une terrible tension et est enregistré en première mondiale. Pourtant, il y a encore mieux : la suite brillante et sombre à la fois qu’arrangea à son usage Frantisek Jilek pour ce chef d’œuvre longtemps disparu qu’est Osud, « Le Destin », et qu’il fut le premier à retrouver et à graver intégralement, prémonition musicale et dramatique de ce que parachèvera L’Affaire Makropoulos dans le monde lyrique de Janacek, musique fabuleuse réglée ici comme un étrange ballet de sons, le plus secret du théâtre musical du musicien de Brno y est enchâssé. Et maintenant un second volume : "De la maison des morts" et "La Petite renarde rusée" attendent (Discophilia - Artalinna.com). Yet he has bequeathed us precious few pieces for independent symphony orchestra. Hence, a number of conductors (Václav Talich, followed by František Jílek, Sir Charles Mackerras and others) have striven to expand this limited repertoire by creating suites from his operas. The present recording features such treatments of his three major musical dramas. Jenufa was the first opera to be set to a prose text. The currently globally celebrated piece reflected the sorrow Janácek felt after the death of his two beloved children and gave rise to a deep personal crisis, when in 1903 the National Theatre in Prague declined to stage the piece on the grounds that it was of dubious artistic quality. In Fate, Janácek experimented with and explored the potentialities of the musical--dramatic form itself. Similarly to Jenufa, it too met with rejection and would only be premiered 30 years after the composer’s death. Katya Kabanova is one of the greatest Janácek works and one of the most beautiful lyric operas of the 20th century and beyond. The CD presents Janácek’s singular musical idiom in suites from his three pivotal operas. The artists featured on the recording, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the conductor Tomáš Netopil, have garnered acclaim with two previous Janácek projects (Sinfonietta, Taras Bulba, etc., SU 4131; Glagolitic Mass, The Eternal Gospel, SU 4150), both of them voted Gramophone Editor’s Choice.
