Homilius Stölzel Rolle Cantates De Noël Herfurtner Günther Poplutz Spogis Willens

Après avoir documenté l'oeuvre des Tunder, Weckmann, Kuhnau ; CPO se penche sur la génération suivante. Les noms de Gottfried August Homilius, de Johann Heinrich Rolle, de Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel et de Christoph Forster ne vous disent rien ? Normal, ces musiciens allemands né entre 1690 et 1720, oubliés par l'histoire de la musique, sont restés dans l'ombre de Bach et de Telemann. Organistes de formation, Homilius et Rolle ont consacré leur musique à l'église. Förster a composé, outre des cantates, des pages orchestrales et concertantes. Quant à Stölzel, on lui doit aussi un important corpus de musique profane et religieuse (Passion, oratorios, messes et cantates). Ces cinq cantates de ce CD ont été composées à l'occasion des fêtes de Noël et sont de tonalité plutôt volubile et joyeuse, instrumentées avec force trompettes et timbales. La cantate "Erhöret die Tore der Welt" d'Homilius jouit d'un choeur charpenté et d'une aria de soprano d'un style opératique prononcé. Du labeur solide. Les six minutes de la mini cantate de Stölzel, sans récitatifs passent comme lettre à la poste. Les deux intéressantes cantates de Johann Heinrich Rolle présentent des caractéristiques similaires : choeurs d'ouverture bipartites forcément contrastés, fondés sur la dualité ténèbres - clarté, récitatifs bien sentis et arias ingénieusement développées. Une écriture fonctionnelle certes, mais toujours inventive. Reste la petite cantate de Cristoph Förster "Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe" qui nous offre une belle aria de soprano avec flûte obligée. For more than two thousand years the birth of Christ, the incarnation of God as a child in the manger at Bethlehem, has fascinated and inspired artistic production and reflection. It is precisely in the field of music that thousands of songs and multipart compositions have come down to us attesting to the richness of this body of works and documenting the diversity of artistic expression. Most of these works were composed for liturgical use in the Christian churches. It is a rewarding experience to sift through the repertoire and to edit and record previously unknown works. This year our Christmas CD presents recording premieres of five cantatas: one each by Bach’s contemporaries Christoph Förster (1693-1745) and Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (1690-1749) and three by members of the following generation, one by Gottfried August Homilius (1714-85) and two by Johann Heinrich Rolle (1716-85). All the cantatas were composed for use in Lutheran religious services and are based on a similar plan of construction: an extensive opening chorus is followed by recitatives and arias, and a chorale strophe from a church hymn concludes the work. The opening choruses are usually based on short quotations from the Bible, and the festive splendor of the trumpets and timpani forms the dominant tonal element.
