De Johann Wilhelm Hertel, compositeur allemand au style flamboyant empreint d'Empfindsamkeit, on connaissait au disque symphonies, concertos (le célèbre concerto pour trompette), quelques sonates pour clavier, mais tout un pan de sa musique notamment religieuse restait à découvrir (odes, lieder, oratorios). Voici la parution heureuse d'une longue pièce entre cantate et oratorio, de 24 numéros d'après un texte assez didactique de H.J.Tode « La naissance de Jésus ». Elle précède G.H. Stolzel et J.H. Rolle (enregistrés chez CPO) eux aussi inspirés par la même source, et s'inscrit dans la même tradition, fidèle au texte et illustratif quant à la mise en musique. Hertel ne se démarque pas de cette démarche piétiste du et ne s'accorde que peu de fantaisie à peindre la naissance de Jésus. Chaque numéro (choral, aria, chœur) est défini selon le même schéma rhétorique et taillé sur mesure. On se réjouit d'entendre une telle musique fort bien composée pour les voix, bénéficiant d'un bel équilibre du continuo de l'orchestre et des chœurs. Du bel ouvrage assurément. Quelques arias sont particulièrement émouvantes. Celle du ténor, toute en fragilité Wie brünstig sie komen von Ephratas Auen et celle, plus roborative de la soprano (n°22) rappelant l'air de la Reine de la nuit. L'interprétation de chaque soliste et du Kölner Akademie menés par la direction appliquée du chef M.A.Willens, sert à merveille cette partition. Opulent Christmas Oratorio with Trumpets The Koelner Akademie under the conductor Michael Alexander Willens presents a compelling interpretation of the Christmas Oratorio by Johann Wilhelm Hertel. The former »Court and Chapel Composer« at the court of Duke Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Hertel composed this cantata between 1777 and 1783 for its sacred concerts. The oratorio came across very well and in the introduction by Franziska Seils to the score published by the ortus musikverlag, we read : »Along with the harmonically highly expressive opening chorus and the simply set chorales on familiar melodies from Christmas songs, the angelic proclamation radiating in trumpet splendor and the fully dimensioned, eight-part concluding chorus certainly also contributed to the popularity of the work. … Various areas of influence interact in Hertel’s Christmas cantata: the tradition of the popular lyrical pastoral idyll and the dramatic oratorio, the baroque philosophy of the emotions and the will to symphonic design.
