L’Opéra de Paris a présenté récemment une nouvelle production du "Faust" de Gounod ridicule de prétention et noyée de tics, un supplice. Quel plaisir de retrouver la mise en scène flamboyante de David McVicar, qui saisit et la tragédie de Faust et l’univers de Gounod pour en faire mieux qu’un mythe, une histoire saisissante dont les héros nous parlent avec une telle vérité. Impossible de décrire par le menu cette mise en scène géniale qui aura totalement renouvelé notre approche de l’œuvre, il faut la voir pour le croire, d’autant que la distribution est assez exceptionnelle : Michael Fabiano à l’ampleur vocal d’un vrai Faust, les aigus nourris par un soutien qui s’est perdu depuis le temps des Gedda et des Vanzo, Irina Lungu n’est pas du tout cette Marguerite de poche à laquelle on nous a trop habitué, et face au Valentin exemplaire de Stéphane Degout, Marta Fontanals-Simmons étonnera en Siebel . Seule paille réelle, mais majeure, le Mephistopheles d’Erwin Schrott, prestance certes, présence même, mais de voix pourtant charbonnée au possible jamais un instant la basse qu’exige le rôle. Remboursez-vous avec la direction flamboyante de Dan Ettinger qui donne un grand coup de jeune à la partition de Gounod, et laissez vous emporter par l’univers de David McVicar. Disillusioned with life, the aged philosopher Faust calls upon Satan to help him. The devil Méphistophélès appears and strikes a bargain with the philosopher. Faust can have youth and the love of the beautiful Marguerite, but only in exchange for his soul… Gounod’s masterpiece is given the grandest of Royal Opera staging in David McVicar’s richly layered and theatrically exuberant production, with the drama moved to Second Empire Paris, spectacular sets and costumes, and extensive dance. Michael Fabiano as a seductively witty Faust, Erwin Schrott as a devilish Méphistophélès and Irina Lungu as a passionate Marguerite are joined by the Royal Opera Chorus and a cast of Royal Opera favourites. Dan Ettinger conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in Gounod’s gloriously tuneful score.
