C’est un fait historique bien connu qu’au XIX° siècle l’importance de l’opéra a relégué au second plan la musique instrumentale italienne et que le renouveau de cette dernière a dû attendre Casella, Respighi et Malipiero pour s’imposer au niveau international. Pourtant les noms de Martucci et Sgambati méritent une notoriété plus grande que celle que la postérité leur accorde. De ce dernier, on connaissait (relativement) bien la première symphonie (1881), une page pleine de charme dont la structure inhabituelle en cinq mouvements évoque plus une suite d’orchestre qu’une symphonie classique. Mais on ignorait presque tout de la seconde (1884) que le compositeur n’entendit jamais. Créée en 1915 lors d’un office à sa mémoire puis oubliée derechef, elle ne fut exécutée à nouveau qu’en 2014. Vaste partition en quatre mouvements, elle offre un couplage idéal à son ainée, la réunion des deux sur un seul disque de près de 80’ s’imposant comme une belle découverte. L’interprétation pleine de fougue et d’énergie de la philharmonie du Wurttemberg sous la baguette de son chef titulaire de 2008 à 2015, le suédois Ola Rudner est l’atout maître de ce disque hautement recommandable à tous les amoureux du répertoire orchestral rare. The composition of magnificent symphonies was not exactly the domain of Italian composers of the nineteenth century. However, this became the calling of Giovanni Sgambati, a Liszt pupil very much qualifying as the most important composer of symphonic music in Italy during his century. He contributed more to the renaissance of Italian instrumental music than any other composer, paving the way for its new popularity during the second half of the nineteenth century. Liszt described Sgambati as an »extraordinary and genuine artist,« Richard Wagner recommended his works, and European heads of state decorated him with medals. Although the dates of this Rome native lay rather precisely between those of Verdi and Puccini, he did not compose a single opera and as a composer endeavored to develop a style that would blend the cantability of his fatherland into the structural landscapes of the German romanticists. The harmonic language of his symphonies is tonal but also nuanced with many chromatic means and dissonances. His second symphony was rediscovered only a few years ago and now is celebrating its world recording premiere on cpo!
