Issu d'une famille musicienne établie à New-York, Bristow étudia le piano, le violon, le contrepoint et l'orchestration avec son père, pianiste, clarinettiste et chef d'orchestre réputé. Il intégrera à dix-huit ans les premiers violons de l'Orchestre de la Société Philharmonique de New-York, ajoutant ultérieurement des activités de chef de chœur. Justement reconnu pour ses œuvres chorales, Bristow composa également des opéras et de la musique symphonique. Brillamment défendue - quel feu et en même temps quelle cohésion ! - la symphonie n° 2 doit-elle comme tant d'autres productions contemporaines son oubli au voisinage des sommets d'abîme de Schumann ? Composée en 1853, l'année de l'ultime moisson pour l'auteur de la symphonie « Printemps », l'œuvre s'inscrit bien davantage dans la clarté solaire mendelssohnienne dont la grâce et la transparence caractéristiques rehaussent l'Allegretto. Il nous est ainsi permis d'échapper par moments à tant de mécanismes huilés dans le vide. Le troisième mouvement Adagio aux couleurs nocturnes nous fait heureusement entrer dans le monde plus vrai de la vie intérieure. Ses beautés semblent avoir infusé un sang neuf au vigoureux et entraînant final. Mais les élans sont souvent affaiblis ou alourdis par cette bonne volonté bien grise. S'il arrive que dans certaines œuvres reconnues l'originalité ou la simple beauté d'un thème fassent regretter que la force et l'inventivité de ses développements soient restées à l'état de promesses, il serait ici bien naïf et illusoire de guetter des miracles du centre de gravité de la forme sonate, cette machine qui vous moudra du grain même lorsqu'il est sans saveur. Finalement ce sont les deux ouvertures qui malgré d'inévitables poncifs et sans une once d'originalité réintroduisent un peu de cette fraîcheur désirée. (Pascal Edeline)

George Frederick Bristow (1825–1898), a pillar of the New York musical community for most of the nineteenth century, was a composer, performer, conductor, educator, and a strong advocate for American music. His musical training took place entirely in New York, where he studied with his father and several prominent members of the Philharmonic Society, now the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Bristow’s Symphony No. 2, “Jullien,” was commissioned by its namesake, the French conductor Louis Antoine Jullien, in 1853. A substantial work in D minor, it is in four movements and is scored for a standard early nineteenth-century orchestra: strings, pairs of winds, brasses, and timpani. The only significant difference is the addition of two horns (for a total of four) and three trombones. All four horns are used in the first and last movements, and all three trombones only in the finale, but there are prominent trombone solos in the first and third movements. The work is clearly “Europeanist” in orientation, for Bristow used as his models several symphonic works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn that had been a regular staple of the Philharmonic Society concerts during its first ten years. Stylistically, the symphony is solidly aligned with the more “conservative” Romantic-period composers rather than with “radical” (i.e., programmatic) symphonists such as Berlioz or Liszt, whose orchestral music was still mostly unknown in America at mid-century. This is the world-premiere recording of the recently published Critical Edition of Symphony No. 2 by musicologist Katherine Preston, who has also contributed a richly informative essay in the accompanying booklet. Premiere recordings of the Overture to Rip Van Winkle (1855) and the Winter’s Tale Overture (1856) round out the program.
