 Ce mal répand la terreur : plus un label allemand qui, outre l'anglais, maintienne dans un livret de CD la troisième grande langue européenne, le français selon notre bonne mémoire. Le mélomane outrageusement sédentaire, plus troglodyte que polyglotte, ne saura donc ici que péniblement qui est ce compositeur (1922-2011). Un viennois devenu américain d'avoir fui en 1938 le nazisme avec ses parents juifs (il retrouva l'Europe à la fin de sa vie). Il y trouva carrière d'abondant auteur de chansons de cabarets, car les grandes majors boycottèrent sa féroce satire politique et sociale, jugée non américaine. Sans parler des ligues de vertu qu'offensa un titre comme ''Please Shoot Your Husband'', incitant à flinguer son mari. Il travailla à Hollywood avec Chaplin, mais fut pareillement tricard dans les radios et télés. Au point qu'on a pu tourner un documentaire intitulé : ''Georg Kreisler n'existe pas'' ! Il avait appris violon et piano, et un Schoenberg avisé l'avait voulu particulièrement comme élève (cela ne se fit pas, suite à difficulté administrative). Grand maître de la petite forme et de sa langue allemande (qu'il considérait comme son seul chez-soi, et on a pu le comparer carrément à un Heinrich Heine !), ce Pierrot peu lunaire composa des centaines de chansons, deux opéras et autres comédies musicales. Et tout cela, comme nous trouvons qu'un critique l'a parfaitement défini : ''dans une vision à la fois vache, mélancolique et rêveuse du monde''. Mais la grande surprise nous est tout de même apportée par l'absolument remarquable présent enregistrement : une oeuvre pour piano qui, via la seconde école de Vienne, n'oublie cependant pas le clin d'oeil néoclassique (valse et slow de la sonate en clin d'oeil presque à la Prokofiev...). Autre exemple, les Klavierstücke sont un modèle dans l'humour, l'enjoué, le gracieux et le spirituel, avec de rapides modulations qui tantôt lorgnent côté Gershwin, tantôt s'attardent à une méditation attendrie presque schumanienne. Musique très personnelle, très humaine, et qui demeure vraiment encore à découvrir. Sautez donc le pas, car si les mauvais compositeurs méritent la prison, ce Kreisler ne finira sûrement pas au violon ! (Gilles-Daniel Percet) The legendary cabaret performer Georg Kreisler is known for his unparalleled catalogue of chansons to which he penned both the lyrics and music, and for his concerts and recordings in which he sang and accompanied himself at the piano. He was, on the other hand, hardly known as a composer of classical music. The publication of the book entitled “Georg Kreisler – Grenzgänger” drew the attention of the pianist Sherri Jones to Kreisler's early instrumental music lurking at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. At the composer’s behest, she premiered the piano works between 2009 and 2012 already. In 1955 Kreisler composed the third and last work for piano solo, the “Five Bagatelles”. With structural economy, unconventional musical ideas, and densely-packed contrasts, Kreisler succeeded in forming the small group of interchangeable character pieces into a compelling synthesis. The “Sonata for Piano” dates from 1952. In the preface of the printed edition, Kreisler recalls that “the sonata very gradually emerged from me at that time”. The three-movement work ranks among the varied attempts from the middle of the last century to always conceive new and original forms of piano sonatas. According to the inventory of Kreisler's estate, three untitled and undated piano pieces were composed around 1947. The first of the “Three Piano Pieces” (“Allegro”) vacillates between not taking itself seriously and trying valiantly to do so, between rhapsodic effusiveness and detachment. Next in line is a furious toccata (“Con spirito”), bristling with intricate piano writing, which is over before it has even begun. And the final piece (“Largo”) quite suddenly leads to a world of utmost seriousness. Kreisler’s last completed composition, the song cycle “Five Songs for Barbara”, which he finished a few months before his death, is an unsentimental, predominantly polytonal homage to his wife and stage partner, Barbara Kreisler-Peters. In early August 2011 Kreisler sent the autograph to Sherri Jones: “Your superb work with my music inspired me to make another attempt at serious music. So I just wrote five connected pieces for mezzo-soprano, piano and violin which I am going to send to Schott soon – and, of course, to you if you are interested." The new series “WERGO Colours” is an expansion of the well-known WERGO catalogue. “Colours” stands for the variety and richness of contemporary musical art beyond the so-called “avant-garde”.
