Fin De Siècle Lieder De Schreker Schoenberg Zemlinsky Berg Mahler Vondung Berner

Des œuvres « de jeunesse » exclusivement. Schreker et Zemlinsky restent dans la lignée du romantisme allemand. Schœnberg et Berg franchissent timidement les limites de la tonalité. Mahler puise dans le Wunderhorn les bases de son univers. Un programme Vienne fin de siècle, construit avec intelligence et cohérence. Anke Vondung a les moyens vocaux d’un grand mezzo dramatique. La séduction du timbre est immédiate, mais l’expressivité prime : dans Das Mädchen mit verbundenen Augen, écoutez cette façon de faire planer l’ombre de la mort sur le seul mot Schicksal, glaçant. Ce sont bien les infimes dosages de couleurs, tout en mezza voce, qui font le prix des Maeterlink Lieder de Zemlinsky, sommet de cet album. La lumière qui éclaire le Frühling de Schreker, la tendresse et l’humour des Wunderhorn, les exemples abondent, démontrant les riches possibilités de cette voix. L’accord intellectuel et musical – les timbres, la respiration – avec Christoph Berner est idéal de naturel. Two years ago, inspired by our shared love of Viennese music and visual arts at the turn of the 20th century, Anke and I put together a vocal recital programme featuring lieder by Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Alexander Zemlinsky and Gustav Mahler. This recording is based on that programme, and we have added the strikingly expressive early songs of Franz Schreker. As we studied these compositions more thoroughly, we were fascinated to discover the degree of musical and biographical connections they shared – the many ways these five composers inspired and had a reciprocal influence on one another. The music of Gustav Mahler was the focal point around which all subsequent “Viennese” compositions were centered; therefore we have chosen to place Mahler’s songs at the end of our selection. Over a century ago – in Vienna in 1913 – Schoenberg conducted a concert featuring Mahler’s Songs on the Death of Children and Zemlinsky’s Four Orchestral Songs on poems by Maeterlinck, an evening that went down in history as the Skandalkonzert. Over a century later, we are glad to note that this music is now acknowledged as an integral part of the great European musical legacy.
