From the liner notes by Claudio Proietti: “Perhaps we cannot state categorically, regarding the creative path of Ivan Fedele, what famously belongs to the experience of masters like Brahms and Schoenberg – that the piano represents the “laboratory” where experiments are performed on the crucial phases of movement to new ideas in composition – but certainly the instrument is the favoured place for his invention, a travelling companion that he cannot do without and to which he periodically returns. And this is certainly no accident, because Ivan Fedele was born as a pianist. His first contacts with music took place through the keyboard; after his move to Milan he studied the piano at the conservatory with Bruno Canino; while he was completing his training as a composer he engaged in a worthwhile concertising activity; the figure of his piano teacher accompanied that of his composition teacher as an inevitable model in shaping the modernity of his musical thought. We must not be surprised that the piano repertory represents, in Ivan Fedele’s extensive catalogue, an important space occupied by fundamental pieces, starting from the splendid Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra of 1993. Several times it has happened that Fedele, speaking of his piano works, has used expressions like “ciò che resta dopo aver dimenticato tutto” (what remains after having forgotten everything), revealing in this way that in them one finds the most intimate memory, the matter that is substantiated around instinctive, natural gestures, the most essential expressive manifestations [...]”.
