Compositrice britannique mais de formation germanique apprise à Leipzig avec Reinecke et Herzogenberg, Ethel Smyth fut très tôt introduite dans des cercles où elle côtoya Brahms, Tchaikovski ou Grieg. Ses premiers opéras ont été écrits en allemand, à l’image de "Der Wald", créé en 1902 à l’opéra de la cour de Berlin. Future sufragette, lesbienne revendiquée, Smyth y donne le beau rôle à la redoutable figure de Iolanthe, une femme forte et dominatrice qui finit par répudier son amant le landgrave, et conduire à la mort le couple d’amoureux un peu mièvres Heinrich, coupable d’avoir braconné un cerf, et Röschen, avant de s’enfuir dans la forêt sa retraite ultime. Sur ce sombre drame dont le livret est d’Ethel Smyth elle-même, elle écrit une musique très inspirée de Weber et surtout Wagner, presque jusqu’au pastiche parfois. Pour révéler la musique de cette compositrice que défendirent des chefs comme Thomas Beecham, les forces de l’opéra de Wuppertal dirigées avec fougue par Patrick Hahn et une distribution homogène savent donner à cette œuvre brillante mais assez peu personnelle l’élan dramatique qui entraine les auditeurs dans cette histoire assez invraisemblable mais bien révélatrice de son autrice et de ses combats. Choirs of spirits, wild passions, unshakeable loyalty, a gruesome act of murder and the eternal triumph of love over death. These are the thoroughly familiar ingredients of the libretto that Ethel Smyth wrote (in German) for her one-act opera Der Wald (The Forest). The music, however, is anything but gruesome. Echoes of Robert Schumann, some striking reminiscences of Richard Wagner and, particularly in the prologue, an unmistakable touch of Art Nouveau carry the drama. It had its premiere at the Berlin Court Opera on 9 April 1902. It was subsequently staged at the Royal Opera House in London and presented with triumphant success at the Met in New York in March 1903. There were standing ovations and a veritable sea of flowers for the 44 year-old Englishwoman, who was the first woman to conquer the classical music temple on Broadway with her work. Talent can achieve anything.
