 Christoph Croisé (1993-) naît en Allemagne, grandit en Suisse, fait ses débuts sur scène au Carnegie Hall de New York, tombe en amour avec son violoncelle italien de 1680, parcourt les festivals et le monde pour interpréter les musiques des autres, un périple peut-être à l’origine de sa propre inspiration de compositeur – dont résulte ce "Voyage Exotique", en cinq chapitres, inspiré, notamment, par le compositeur et violoncelliste italien Giovanni Sollima (son post-minimalisme lui-même influencé par le jazz, le rock et les traditions méditerranéennes), et par le compositeur (jazz et classique) et saxophoniste suisse américain Daniel Schnyder. Et c’est vrai que, parmi ces pièces largement colorées par le violoncelle, l’impact des musiques non savantes se ressent chez Croisé : le jazz, la techno (Jeff Mills, Carl Cox), mais aussi la musique électronique (on renifle du Kraftwerk – celui revisité par le Balanescu Quartet – dans Tarantula Spiritualis, le troisième mouvement du Grand duo pour 2 violoncelles, qui donne son nom à l’album) ou la musique de blockbuster (The Escape, le premier mouvement de la Sonate pour violoncelle n° 1) – rien d’autre, au fond, que ce qu’ont fait Beethoven ou Brahms en tendant l’oreille vers les musique populaires et traditionnelles de leur temps. (Bernard Vincken) Christoph Croisé channels his prowess as a cellist – “he’s got it all – technical chops, impeccable musicianship and imaginative daring” (Gramophone) – into compositional ingenuity on the first album devoted entirely to his own works. Christoph draws inspiration from a variety of musical role models, including contemporary and centuries past, paying homage to the time-honoured evolution of classical music that has melded current conventions with popular styles. Traditional forms, such as sonata and concerto, are imbued with jazz, blues, bossa nova and improv to create, as Christoph puts it, “a musical and cultural melting pot.” Christoph’s compositional urge was spurred by the pandemic and lockdown. The four works on Voyage Exotique were written between 2020 and 2022. He also cites current world events as a motivating influence. His first cello concerto, imbued with high-wire virtuosity that makes full use of the cello’s – and Christoph’s – capabilities, opens a programme that also includes an imaginary intergalactic journey in the form of a clarinet trio, and a sonata for cello and piano that is by turns pensive, agitated and longing, yet ultimately hopeful. The title track, a “Grand duo” for two cellos is, in the truest sense of the word, an “exotic journey” through foreign sound cultures and myriad cello effects.
