Flore, Floralia romains, Jeux de Flore… La fleur, symbole de printemps, de renouveau, d’éclat, célèbre, en 1685, Charpentier unissant ses talents à ceux de Molière, les exploits guerriers du Roy, substituant aux lauriers virils de la gloire antique la grâce d’une musique « jeune », souriante comme les joies que promet le retour de la paix. Musique primesautière, allègrement syncopée à l’unisson de cette inspiration lumineuse, où alternent des voix « jeunes » d’esprit et « vertes » de son – linéaire et dépourvu de vibrato - Flore, Pan, bergers, chalumeaux et lyres - hautbois, théorbe, viole de gambe et clavecin : un voyage dans un passé aboli qui conserve tous les attraits des couronnes fanées, miraculeusement ressuscitées ici dans leur fragile vigueur de jadis par l’ensemble vocal et chambriste « Boston Early Music Festival », au français irréprochable et aux accents « louisquatorziens » du meilleur aloi. Printemps, fleurs, bergères encore pour cet Orphée de charme lui aussi – Aaron Sheehan - qui continue d’enchanter les Enfers une fois qu’il en est sorti. Qu’adviendra-t-il de son voyage ? On le sait par Ovide et Virgile, mais pas par cet ouvrage-ci, dont deux actes subsistent seuls, d’une inspiration étonnamment originale sur un thème… rajeuni. (Danielle Porte)

During recent years cpo releases of the baroque operas Ariadne by Conradi and Thésée and Psyche by Lully have been nominated for Grammys in the category of the »Best Opera Production.« And that is not all: Thésée and Psyche were nominated for Gramophone Awards in the category of »Baroque Vocal Works« in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Again in cooperation with the Boston Early Music Festival, cpo is now releasing two more baroque operas : compositions by Marc-Antoine Charpentier also proving to be both complex and highly entertaining. Charpentier wrote an impressive number of sacred works suitable for almost all the magnificent feasts and ceremonial rites of the Roman Catholic Church. Although the quantity of his secular works is considerably smaller, what he composed for the stage reveals a variety similar to that of his sacred oeuvre. Among his arias, operas, and incidental works, the symbolic and somewhat cryptic La Couronne de Fleurs (The Crown of Flowers) and the ambitious but fragmentary La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers (The Descent of Orpheus to the Underworld) are genuine standouts. The BEMF once again presents a marvelous cast of young soloists for the interpretation of these two vibrant operas.
