 La soprano italienne Raffaela Milanesi, délaissant un instant les grands rôles, met son grand talent au service de la redécouverte d'un compositeur oublié : Carlo Agostino Badia (Vérone, ou Venise ? 1671, ou 1672 ? - Vienne, 1738). Formé dans la tradition vénitienne, Badia sut gagner l'estime du couple impérial et fut engagé à Vienne vers 1697. Il y fut maître de chapelle de Leopold Ier. Dans la capitale impériale, il fait représenter de nombreux opéras italiens (Narciso, la Ninfa Apollo, Amor vuol somiglianza...), et six oratorios. En 1699 à Nuremberg est publié, sous le titre de "Tributi armonici", un recueil de 12 cantates pour soprano avec basse continue, dont 7 sont présentées dans cet album. On y sent un compositeur encore ancré dans la tradition vénitienne, mais aussi tourné vers l'avenir, l'inspiration arcadienne ou le style galant. Le style, varié, comprend une petite introduction qui se répète en coda. La partie centrale de l'aria – en structure da capo - recherche surtout la continuité expressive. Badia recourt surtout au récitatif sec, sans craindre quelques accords dissonants, et marque son attention aux textes. Ceux-ci nous parlent des amours malheureuses ou contrariées, de séparations, de trahisons, de beauté féminine ou bien chantent la nature. Le chant de Raffaella Milanesi, avec sa force dramatique et son timbre de velours transcende ces poèmes. (Marc Galand) Carlo Agostino Badia was one of the many Italian musicians making his fortune at the court of Vienna where he was hired as a composer in 1694. We have no news about his education, but the musical historiography is mentioning about his great compositional period lasting forty-four years at the service of the emperors Leopold i and Joseph i, in which he produced in large quantities cantatas, melodramas and oratorios greatly appreciated at the Austrian court. From his musical writing it is clear how he was a “ferryer” of that late Baroque (followed by Antonio Caldara who succeeded him at the Viennese court) anticipating the forms of the imminent galant style. In this recording the attention is directed to the profane cantatas, from the collection Tributi Armonici – published in Nuremberg in 1699 – which represent precisely the transition from the traditional style (in particular the Venetian one) to the new eighteenth-century style. The great variety of writing that distinguishes the cantatas is well rendered by the ductile voice of the soprano Raffaella Milanesi accompanied by RomaBarocca Ensemble, under the direction of Lorenzo Tozzi.
