 Tout le violoncelle de Beethoven, Ludwig Hoellscher l’avait déjà enregistré en 1959, à l’orée de la stéréophonie, dans la compagnie un rien embarrassante mais inspirante d’Elly Ney, étiquette Telefunken, distribution strictement outre-rhénane. Magnifique vraiment. Fallait-il y revenir aussi tard qu’en 1972 ? La soixantaine passée, l’archet s’est un rien raidi, étrangement le piano un peu sec que touche Jörg Demus, cherchant peut-être à s’accorder à ce jeu à la pointe, n’ouvre pas plus le chant, ni la prise de son, sans espace, dans les instruments. Ce Beethoven étriqué déconcerte, surtout venant de deux interprètes majeurs qui n’ont pas été si souvent réunis. Au concert, Hoelscher aura connu des « mariages » heureux surtout avec Walter Gieseking, en sonate ou en trio, inspirateur plus efficace. Si les Sonates peinent à s’exalter, les deux amis de studio se déboutonnent dans les cahiers de Variations, Jörg Demus jouant animato, c’est la meilleure part de ce double album, celle qui autorisait une réédition aussi inattendue que pas absolument essentielle.
