 Quelle énergie ! Le “Triple Concerto” s’ouvre avec une puissance incantatoire. Pour Beethoven, ce Concerto représentait un défi technique car il mit sur un même plan d’égalité, les trois parties solistes. Pour cela, il s’inspira de la forme du trio pour piano et cordes très en vogue à l’époque. Toutefois, l’accompagnement orchestral ne se résume pas au rôle de simple faire-valoir. D’un bout à l’autre des trois mouvements, les pupitres sont instrumentés dans une dimension symphonique. Les dialogues sont savoureux et, surtout, d’une tension qui ne faiblit pas un seul instant. Il est vrai que la prise de son très proche du trio facilite, pour l’auditeur, une écoute au cœur de l’orchestre. Les trois instruments n’hésitent pas valoriser au maximum les contrastes. Le second mouvement qui favorise le dialogue entre les solistes et les bois semble comme un instant de pure musique de chambre. Le Rondo alla polacca conclusif est directement enchaîné. La virtuosité n’est pas seulement conviée dans cette lecture enflammée. Il y a beaucoup d’élégance et de clins d’œil avec l’orchestre. Une très belle version moderne de l’œuvre. Pour ce cinquième volume de leur intégrale de l’œuvre pour trio avec piano de Beethoven, les Van Baerle offrent une lecture enthousiasmante de l’arrangement par Beethoven lui-même, de son Septuor. L’ouvrage original connut un tel succès que le compositeur fut sollicité pour cet exercice réalisé en 1802. Le Trio fut ainsi pensé pour piano, violon ou clarinette et violoncelle. On admire la variété des styles et d’atmosphère des six mouvements restitués dans l’esprit du divertissement. Tout y passe : la sérénade, l’air d’opéra, le concerto, l’emphase symphonique ! On se régale d’un plaisir de jouer aussi communicatif. (Jean Dandrésy) In 1799, after having made a name for himself with major compositions in the genres of the piano trio, piano sonata, violin sonata, and string quartet, but before finishing his first symphony, Beethoven wrote a work for mixed strings and winds. This piece, the Septet op. 20, would become one of his most popular compositions, with a large number of arrangements, including the one for piano trio on this disc. The form is clearly related to the divertimenti by Mozart, with six movements that alternate fast and slow tempos. The appearance of the Triple Concerto on the final disc in this series might surprise some listeners, as it is the only work with orchestra, but this composition has more in common with chamber music than with concertos. It was written in 1805, and its instrumentation is highly exceptional if not unprecedented altogether. In tone, it is rather a stark contrast from Beethoven’s other concertos, which generally contain easily recognisable melodies and strikingly rhythmic material, neither of which are found to a great degree here. Furthermore, the opposition of soloist and orchestra, a central aspect of many solo works with orchestra written up until that point that was the engine behind much of the drama, is also absent, with the orchestra taking a largely subservient role to the three soloists. So, although the work was called a ‘Grand Concerto Concertant’ when it was published, it really has very little in common with other works with a similar title. The question is whether this piece is a concerto at all, or whether it could be more fruitfully played and judged as a different kind of experimental piece in a more collaborative genre. This disc takes the latter approach, and by contextualising it in a series of piano trios, it presents this work as Beethoven’s most richly instrumented chamber music.
