Le compositeur et peintre lituanien Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis composa dans sa courte existence plus de 300 œuvres musicales et autant picturales. Sous le titre "Paysages sonores de la Baltique" sont rassemblées huit Préludes et deux Nocturnes pour le piano arrangées pour violoncelle et piano. Il émane de ces courtes pièces assez sombres une solennité méditative d’un romantisme tardif. Trois compositeurs baltes contemporains rendent hommage à leur aîné avec la même formation violoncelle et piano. Le lituanien Žibuoklé Martinaityté signe l’œuvre la plus longue de ce recueil (15 minutes). Titrée en latin "Unda, unda…inundare" (Vague, vague… inonde) l’œuvre s’inspire du poème symphonique "The Sea" de Ciurlionis, son œuvre la plus connue, et de sa fascination pour l’immensité et la puissance de la mer. Avec "A haunting from the past" (Une apparition du passé) l’estonien Mihkel Kerem se glisse habilement dans l’écriture de Ciurlionis. Enfin, le letton Arturs Maskats évoque avec délicatesse Ciurlionis dans le beau manoir de briques rouges de Luznava en Lettonie où Ciurlionis fut en résidence durant l’été de 1906. The album features ten works by Ciurlionis, arranged for cello and piano by Lithuanian cellist Juozas Celkauskas. These arrangements open a new window for experiencing the piano works of Ciurlionis as chamber music, while his pictorially enhanced musical vision remains intact.In addition to the pieces by Ciurlionis, the album introduces three contemporary opuses composed especially for this project by Lithuanian composer Žibuokle Martinaityte, Latvian composer Arturs Maskats and Estonian composer Mihkel Kerem. Each of them, drawing personal inspiration from Ciurlionis, not only wrote a new composition for cello and piano, but also dedicated their creative efforts to the Ciurlionis’ anniversary and this duo of performers, thus making this album not only a retrospective, but also a lively, creative dialogue between eras, cultures and personalities.This album is not merely a musical recording. It is a return to the source for the journey, during which the four bars of an unfinished work are transformed into a newly born world.
