 L’Art de la Fugue, opus ultimum de Jean-Sébastien Bach et l’un des sommets de son œuvre nous est ici donné à l’orgue, dans un cadre historique, puisqu’à Gräfenroda nous sommes à 60 kilomètres d’Eisenach, ville natale de Bach. L’instrument de St. Laurentius, à deux claviers et pédalier, a été fabriqué à l’époque de Bach par Johann Anton Weisse sur les plans de Johann Peter Kellner qui a pu les faire valider par le Cantor. Il est ici joué par Franss-Wilfrid von Promnitz, habitué des orgues anciennes plus imposantes, St. Jakobi de Hambourg ou St. Bavo d’Haarlem. L’interprète a choisi de structurer l’œuvre en 3 parties, disposant les canons symétriquement, au milieu des première et troisième parties et au début ainsi qu’à la fin de la partie médiane, avec la fugue terminale complétée par Davitt Moroney. C’est un choix original mais qui fait sens. Capté de très près dans une église habillée de bois qui ne génère quasiment aucune réverbération, l’instrument, magnifiquement restauré, nous donne l’impression d’être assis à la tribune, ce qui permet de profiter pleinement d’une registration variée qui n’engendre aucune monotonie. As the art of the fugue was not appreciated, and it must be immediately acknowledged that the arrangement of this “Opus ultimum” of Bach’s musical history must be immediately acknowledged, a recomposition became due in turn and the premiere of my organ version took place in 2013 in Ahlbeck. True to the principle “Symmetry is the order of the stupid” (J. Cocteau), I arranged the canons symmetrically: in the centre with parts I and III, and at the start and the end with part II. Symmetry is probably the baroque principal par excellence and more… By the way, the use of the Gräfenrodaer register (“Glockenspiel”) is a reference to Bach’s organ performances in Arnstadt and Mühlhausen – it was in these performances that he had introduced it as a novelty in the dispositions of the two organs. It was also in Arnstadt that Bach’s first composition was written: it was a fugue. And this is what tied the knot.
