 Bonne idée de mettre dans tous ses états concertistes la flûte piccolo, ou plutôt piccoli (cher Michel) car les interprètes ici sont deux, parfois en duo : Nicola Mazzanti, très estimé soliste d'orchestre de son instrument, professeur à Milan et en Suisse, et Alessandro Visintini, élève de Christian Lardé et Aurèle Nicolet, que l'on a vu dans l'orchestre de Rome ou de Gênes. Le répertoire ici est moderne, mais historiquement plus qu'esthétiquement, de compositeurs nés à la charnière entre les dernières années cinquante et soixante. Ainsi, on peut s'étonner qu'un Sorabji, rien de moins, ait pu s'intéresser un peu à ce Lowell Liebermann, américain formé à la Juilliard School, qui a effectivement écrit plusieurs concertos pour ou avec flûte, et qui nous paraît bien conventionnel. ''Plus traditionnel qu'innovateur'', nous a approuvé le New-York Times, c'est dire notre influence lointaine. Bref, une musique quelque peu planante d'entertainment filmique, et qui a au moins le mérite de ce que ça fait du bien par où ça passe. Carlo Galante, lui, diplômé du conservatoire de Milan, a beaucoup écrit pour le théâtre et l'opéra, et de la musique religieuse dont un Dies Irae courageux à la mémoire des victimes de la mafia. Son concerto, également avec partie de percussion, nous ramène ipso facto un peu de nerf, et une orchestration aux accents non dénués d'une certaine magie comme russe. Quant à Alessandro Cavicchi, c'est d'origine un pianiste qui, cette fois-ci, titillerait l'exemple du boeuf sur le toit. Il est vrai que sa branchitude post-moderne s'est beaucoup frottée aux Beatles et, surtout, au rock dit progressif (?). Et maintenant, petits soldats mélomanes, repos! Car voici également un arrangement fort judicieux, et de chambre, d'un concerto pour hautbois de Mozart, qui nous fait finalement regretter qu'on n'ait pas ajouté, tant qu'à faire, un petit mais toujours délicieux ''Recorder Concerto'' de Vivaldi. (Gilles-Daniel Percet) On this unique and diverse recording, three contemporary concertante works for piccolo and orchestra are coupled with an arrangement of Mozart’s Oboe Quartet with the solo wind part exchanged for its treble cousin. Liebermann (b.1961) has acknowledged the music of Dmitri Shostakovich as a consistent inspiration through his career, and especially its latter stages after he withdrew from writing in a toughly modernist idiom. That influence may be appreciated throughout the piercing, lyrical stretches of the Piccolo Concerto composed in 1996, and in its economical orchestration for a Classical-sized orchestra plus an important part for harp. If Vivaldi constitutes your sole engagement so far with the piccolo as a solo instrument, Liebermann’s concerto is a perfect place to start and broaden your appreciation for the instrument as more than the piping, variously eerie or shrill capstone to works by Beethoven, Mahler and indeed Shostakovich. Carlo Galante (b.1959) and Alessandro Cavicchi (b.1957) have also written their concertos in a consistently tuneful idiom with the aim of exploiting the piccolo’s unearthly timbres. Gli Usignoli dell’Imperatore (The birds of the Emperor) is a concerto for two piccolos which retells in music Andersen’s fable of the nightingale, and the Emperor of China who loses interest in the real bird’s song having had an artificial counterpart made for his amusement. By contrast, As night progresses is a homage to the genre of prog rock (exemplified by the work of Cream, Yes and Rick Wakeman); Cavacchi’s previous work has included After Genesis, a chamber work which pastiches and transforms some of the band’s bestknown melodies. The two soloists on this recording are experienced soloists who have played with many of Italy’s orchestras; Visintini has served as principal flautist with the present Orchestra of Bolzano e Trento, while Mazzanti is piccolo soloist with the Maggio Musicale orchestra of Florence.
