 Heureuse époque qui voit une exceptionnelle floraison de contre-tenors : après la voix torrentielle de Franco Fagioli le mois dernier, faisons la connaissance de Iestyn Davies. D’abord le timbre : étrange, désincarné, presque minéral, puis l’émission d’une pureté instrumentale qui nourrit des phrasés d’une douceur irréelle. Une voix faite pour la musique sacrée plus que pour le théâtre, propre à exalter le Haendel le plus austère, le plus accompli également, celui des oratorios qui fournissent la matière de cette album. Accompagnement discret et professionnel de Robert King, serviteur au meilleur sens du terme d’un chanteur dont chaque intervention est à écouter pieusement et à méditer : tendre ironie dans Semele, espérance et quiétude dans Israel in Egypt, tranquille assurance dans Jephta, mais allons à l’essentiel : si vous accordez à ce disque la disponibilité spirituelle qu’il requiert, presque arrivé(e) au terme du voyage, vous vous laisserez emporter par le transcendant who calls my parting soul from death d’Esther, comme si le soprano adamantin de Carolyn Sampson venait éclairer de l’intérieur ce diamant noir : awake my soul, vraiment. (Olivier Gutierrez) Renowned countertenor Iestyn Davies and The King's Consort present an outstanding programme of arias from Handel oratorios. The eleven solo arias include the lyrical ‘O sacred oracles of truth’ (from Belshazzar), the exquisite ‘Tune your harps’ (Esther), with its vocal and oboe duet set over a delicate bed of pizzicato strings, ‘Eternal source of light’ (featuring supreme trumpet playing from Crispian Steele-Perkins), the melodious ‘Your tuneful voice’, and a virtuoso performance of the warlike ‘Mighty love now calls to arm’. Rari??es include two arias from The Triumph of Time and Truth: ‘On the valleys, dark and cheerless’, and an especial jewel, ‘Mortals think that Time is sleeping’, with its gentle, inexorably ??ck-tocking orchestral accompaniment. Iestyn Davies is also joined in two duets by soprano Carolyn Sampson : the ecstatic ‘Welcome as the dawn of day’ (from Solomon) and the ghostly ‘Who calls my parting soul from death’ (Esther). The orchestral accompaniment from The King’s Consort is full of varied colours : the disc also includes the vividly characterised overture to Jephtha, and the bucolic overture to Samson, featuring splendid natural horn playing.
